Personal background
Hi there!
I'm a 26-year-old guy from The Netherlands. I work in ICT (Information and Communication Technology). When I am not working, I keep myself busy with diving, computers, reading, movies, music and... crunching SETI packets. I am a member of a SETI group, called SETI@Netherlands. Early next year I will start a new job in Web design.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe in extraterrestrial life. I don’t think aliens are here now, but they are out there… somewhere. I just can’t accept we are the only form of intelligent life in the universe or even in our own galaxy. With those billions of stars out there it is scientifically impossible (or at least improbable) that our planet is the only one that has intelligent being running around on it.

I think if we do discover a signal with this project, we won’t be able to use it to answer them or even contact them in the future, but it will prove we are not alone. That’s why I’m doing my share and crunching as much packets as I can. The remote possibility that I could be the one that may find an interesting signal is just an extra kick. I’m definitely not counting on it ;).

I think we should broadcast some kind of signal into space. I know all our regular transmissions are out there, but I mean sending a specific signal that someone (or something) might pick up some day. The message should tell them we are looking for contact. It should also provide them with information on who we are and why we want to make contact. Of course it should be kept as simple as possible, so they can translate it with little effort as possible.

Of course receiving a message would turn the world as we know it upside down. We would finally know we are not alone. This would probably have some religious implications, but that shouldn’t stop us in our search. What is more important to us? A universe that is structured in a way that most religions think it is structured or the way it really is. I would say ‘the way it really is’, but I guess a lot of people would rather live in a universe that exists according to their own ideas, even if science can prove those ideas are false.

In short: let’s keep listening and start transmitting. Someone is out there and we need to find them. Once we do, we might start to understand our place in the universe.
