Personal background
Hi, my name is Steve. I'm from a little tiny town in Michigan. I'm 19 years old, My sign is Leo. I first got into SETI@Home after seeing Contact. I started my first work unit on a old 486 66Mhz machine. I spent 890 hours on it and was only 60% through one work unit so I gave up until I got my new computer. It is a custom built machine, so no brand name, AMD Athlon XP 1600 (running at 1405Mhz), 256M DDR RAM, only a 20Gig hard drive though. I am hoping to get a second 60Gig hard drive soon. I am extremely empressed with Seti, now I can finish a work unit in about 19 Hours. Wonderful.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I do believe extraterrestrial life does exist. But I don't believe I will live to see the day we make contact with it. I believe such a discovery would have profound positive effects on mankind but a devistating impact on all religions. This may be very dangerous. I can only wish that the generation that discovers alien life, can handle it.
I believe that not transmitting signals into the cosmos is just plain hiding. I don't agree with that. We do not yet have anything to fear.
I run SETI@Home because I feel priveledged to be a part of such a great endeavor for mankind.
