Personal background
I am a middle school Earth Science techer living in Oklahoma City. One of the concepts we cover in class is the electromagnetic spectrum. I started using SETI@home in 2003 to introduce my kids to the lower end of the spectrum. Strangly enough, I found that they find it easier to grasp what a radio wave is by using SETI than they do using radios. Go figure.
I am fairly disgusted with myself not joining SETI@home earlier in the program. I had run across several people who had the GUI running and had thought it very neat, however I had never taken the time to start. I'm trying to make up for lost time now.
Our school just upgraded from Pentium 200's to P4 1700's. As I find the time I am installing the GUI on the P4's. Another teacher and I are also trying to create a farm system out of the old p-200's. We should have a 24 node system up within the next two months, hopefully before the project winds down. If not then it will be ready for SETI2.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
As much as I want to believe that intellegent life exists on other planets, I am not convinced that it does. I am well aware of the statistacal probabilities that are floating around, however I think there are some fundamental flaws in the equation.
Regardless, what a great way to get a mass of people engaged in a current and important science experiment!
