I want only to speed, in small part, SETI@Home's work but not to become enraptured by it since a program goal was ease and lack of intrusiveness. See richardc020.com for the rest. |
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
Extraterrestrial life can certainly exist though I'll believe it when I see it. I won't believe until I see it which probably degrades my vigor towards SETI@home, but I argue that I process data (not a lot of it, but as much as I can) and am eager to await total results in many years. Until then, I'm open-minded.
We'll, hopefully and most likely, discover such life remotely via EM-related means instead of direct contact. If direct contact occurs, no, I do not envision the fantastic Hollywood encounter, but rather a far less action-dramatic though equally fascinating.
Humans should ask first what our intentions are behind transmitting a beacon for others to find. The first response is typically to engage other lifeforms out of either 1. curosity/exploration 2. or uniting with other lifeforms. In either instance, I must wonder why? While I see the benefits, I believe energy, money, and brainpower can be better invested in seeking these lifeforms and knowing with what we would be dealing.
I run SETI@Home to aid the scientific community since I have too much unused computing power at my disposal. I want to make the fullest use of it, and this purpose is one easily yet unintrusively available to me. I recommend the program never become intrusive or difficult to install. While SETI@home's user base is more computer literate and intelligent than the general population, inconvenience ires us all. |
