Personal background
I am located in Abingdon, Maryland, USA. I enjoy hanging out with my kid, aquariums, computers and amateur radio. Sometimes I have the time to play with electronics, kit building and tinkering with all kinds of stuff. I work as the website programmer / webmaster for Tritronics, Inc. and enjoy it immensely.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
It's not a question of if extraterrestrial life exists but where. Locating it is only a matter of time and determination. I think the SETI project is a great start and utilizes the best technology we presently have for investigation. In the future our research should diversify into newer technologies such as light modulation or digital encoding, and similar applications towards gravity and molecular / atomic relational forces. Research into this will have a profound impact into our own use of these technologies, especially gravity manipulation. Consideration should also be given to detecting signals with a receiver outside of the screaming-loud interference of our own solar system.

Should we send out a beacon? Well, we are sending out countless signals already with every RF transmission we make - good or bad. I would not purposefully try to reach an entity until we have a better idea of what type of technology to use for the potential receiver to understand. More importantly humans would need to widely accept the idea of extraterrestrial life and the potential implications and benefits of our interacting with it. I can't see this happening in our lifetime, but you never know.
