This quote sums it up quite nicely I think. I think it's a good idea to look for evidence of extra-terrestrial life, but I don't think we should be advertising our presence in the galaxy just yet. Not until we know what's out there. Those who believe that any race sufficiently advanced to travel interstellar space would be peaceful as a matter of course are deluding themselves. There is no evidence whatsoever to suggest this, and we have an awful track record as a race when it comes to making predictions about things we know little or nothing about. This is one we cannot afford to get wrong!
