Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Q: Do you think extraterrestrial life exists? If so, when and how will humans discover it? What are the possible benefits and dangers of such a discovery?

A: The question on my mind is not whether or not extraterrestrial life exists but will life on Earth last long enough for us to find out?

At our current rate of "development" we may use up all of our natural resources before we get a chance to discove intelligent life beyond our solar system.

And what if we manage to break our bond with this planet to colonise others, won't we use them up just as quickly, if not faster?

Then what if we are discovered by an intelligent alien civilisation? Will we be seen as equals or as some kind of virus, destroying any world with the right conditions for us to thrive on? How would we deserve to be treated?

Q: Should humans transmit a beacon for others to find? If so, what information should we send?

A: We already have, alien beings, unless they have a completely different perception of the Universe around them, will no doubt detect the copious ammount of EM radiation we have been pouring into space since the invention of the wireless. The content of our message; mostly fiction, the product of the human imagination, our deepest fears and desires played out and re-run in 45 minute episodes.

Q: Why do you run SETI@home? What are your views about the project? Any suggestions?

A: Mankind is reaching out, we yearn to touch to find something like ourselves out there. What we find is perhaps less important than what we learn about ourselves in the process. I want to be part of that exploration, perhaps we will find a better way to live. An existance in harmony with the matter and energy of the Universe. Pehaps, through science we will rediscover our roots in nature. Is that hoping too much?
