Profile: Tom Gibson

Personal background
Well, I have faith in the scientific method(pun intended). I enjoy experimenting in the sonic arts, reading and learning about several aspects of particle physics, cosmology, biology, computer technology, and philosophy among other things. Nothing serious, just enjoying life.

As far as spiritual beliefs? I consider myself an atheist. Agnostic atheism as I like to say, though I generally believe there is no invisible man hiding in the sky(ie. god). Even if there is a god, I do not agree with organized religions(they are all man made), but rather what we can observe and prove beyond a reasonable doubt.

I believe various molecules, plant allies and their chemical components(every living thing is but a complex chemical reaction) can help us to see the world and our place in it from a different point of view, allow us to see relationships that would otherwise go unnoticed(just do your research and know what you are doing - moderation is the key). I believe in personal freedom. What business is it of mine what you do so long as you dont hurt, kill, torment, or steal from others?
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Honestly, I do not know if extraterrestrial life exists, but it is possible, and, I think, quite probable. The only way to find out is to look for it. I greatly approve of what Seti@Home is doing, and am impressed by the ingenious way they went about doing it, allowing people around the globe to volunteer their unused cycles. I think that if we do find a signal, most likely it will help to bring us all together, to make us realize that we are not really that different, and to help us to try and understand each other a little more. Religious extremists may hinder that peace, but I think logic and compassion will prevail. There will always be wars, but I think this would greatly reduce the number of them.

Should we send a beacon? That's a tough question. How do we decide something like that with so many unknowns? Do we really want to be discovered? Chances are that ET's would be peaceful to life on other planets, especially if it is the first they discover. Maybe it would help them, and us, to not feel so alone. But then again there is always the chance that a race of war mongering aliens may find us and deem us a threat to their dominance in the galaxy... Sci-fi paranoia. But truth is we dont know, and I have basically rambled on taking an entire paragraph to say 'I dont know.' But isn't it fun?
