Personal background
I am a supervisor at a large Butane/Propane storage terminal. Having been here in the "Out of Control" Room for over 23 years, I've seen a lot of changes. We started here on relays, telex machines and rotary phones! I've had to implant silicone chips in my grey matter as my duties have gotten increasingly more complex and our facility has tried to stay on the forefront in operations and safety. As a result I have come to love computing and SETI seemed like a real good use for all those PCs I had sitting around I had built. Unfortunately I may need some kind of 12 step program...it's 'almost' out of hand. I enjoy participating here and look forward to what's next.
I have a scrapbook at home with Sputnik news articles in it somewhere.....Crap I'm old!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1) Yes, without a doubt. I really can't speculate. Perhaps we already have but I doubt it. The benefits would be an accelerated broadening of our perspective the likes of which are really probably unimaginable.
2) Yes. Something more than "All in the Family" reruns would be nice! Voyager 1 was a good example of the type of message, in my opinion.
3) I'm an overclocker at heart and it makes little sense to ramp something to the hilt and have it idling all the time. SETI seemed a perfect fit when I was introduced to it. I am a big fan of Command line (short article somewhere in the archives here of mine) and would like to see everyone able to use that if they could and desire to. It seems a little complicated to setup for many I've tried to help.
