Profile: StarFire

Personal background
I live in New England, not too far from the coast. I'm 45 (29 with the wind chill factor, which is why I never leave New England in the winter), and am unemployed due to a severe bone disease. It's not so bad really, I get plenty of time to go online and study and read and restudy anything mathematical or astronomical when I'm having a better day than usual. I studied astronomy in college and have been a star- and moon-gazer since childhood. I love Egyptian culture and tend to believe that the ancient Egyptians possessed more knowledge and understanding of mathematics and astonomy than they ought to have. Whether they had extraterrestrial assistance or not is yet to be proven, but being of the mind that all things are not within our limited perceptions, I lean heavily toward the possibility. I adore science fiction. It makes one stretch his/her mind outward to embrace new ideas. I also write poetry, finding this planet in itself amazingly wonderous, with all its wind and fire, elements that came from who-knows-yet-where, and its odd choice of furry, scaled, and otherwise "clothed" variety of lifeforms with whom we share habitation. If I can't write about what I see all about me, I paint it. If it doesn't (yet) exist here on Earth or within our factual databases, I create it so it will at least come into being for myself and anyone who else with a healthy imagination.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I do believe extraterrestrial life exists. Whether they want us to find them is another subject. My reasons for this belief are many. Anyone who has taken one course in Astronomy knows the mind-boggling expanse of space out there. I'll recap a little of what I learned. The Earth is big, yes? Radius about 6000 miles. The Sun is 93 million miles away and 100 times the size of Earth. Oooooh BIG. Our Solar System lies in the Milky Way Galaxy which is about 80,000 light years in diamter. (ONE light year=about 6 trillion miles). WOW. Ours is just one galaxy with its nearest star neighbor being a mere 4.3 light years away. It gets worse (if you're an extremely heliocentric type person--I won't explain that...), there are Local Groups of galaxies within Super Local Groups, etc, etc. Just go take a look at the latest pictures of deep space from Hubble. Ok, that's my reason in terms of astronomy. Although I mentioned math, it's trigonometry and formulas I adore. Probability is not my niche, but it must be someone's. I can't imagine SETI's existence without someone having studied probability and put it all together somehow. What was the probability of intelligent, concious life arising here? Probably pretty improbable (*g*). So if you consider the probability/improbability of intelligent conscious life developing elsewhere as well...well, there must be an equation in there somewhere. Think about it. I do, every time I look up...
