Profile: Steve Hayes

Personal background
I grew up in the midwest, Kansas to be exact. I am 50 years old and I am and always will be a Cowboy at heart. I am naturally curious as to how machines work and that is one reason I got into computers 20 years ago. I am now a Computer Network specialinst in NAS/SAN storage solutions. My hobbies include GoKart racing to releive stress. Although I don't race much anymore I build and maintain the equipment for younger drivers. I am also a hobby gunsmith and have built a number of custom guns. I also ride my Harley when I feel the need to get away but I'm not what you would consider a hard core biker.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
As a small boy I can remember lying in the backyard of my parents home lookinq at the stars. I can't even begin to imagine that we could possibly be the only form of life among the billons of stars and untold number of possible planets. I often wonder what will happen when we make first contact with life from a distant planet. will it turn out as something from "The Day the Earth Stood Still"? Or will it be like "First Encounters" or perhaps "ET". I fear it will be more like "War of the Worlds". In any case first contact will occur at some point in our history and I would rather have us detect them first rather than the reverse.
