Profile: Chris R. Staalman, PhD

Personal background

Born in 1935 in Hilversum (Netherlands), the radio city covering the whole planet. I finished Gymnasium ß, and studied medicine in Utrecht and Leiden. Served five years as a medical officer in the Dutch army to pay off my study debts. Specialized in radiology and worked as a paediatric radiologist for more than 20 years. PhD-thesis: Imaging of embryonal abdominal tumours in children. Active for five years as a visiting professor at the University of Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Honorary member of the Gesellschaft für Pädiatrische Radiologie. Upon retirement I started as a student in History of Art, being especially interested in architecture. I have a strong belief in God, defined as the principle behind all that is, and in his son Jesus Christ, my Saviour.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Because the universe is very large there is a fair chance on extraterrestrial intelligence. However, I fully agree with my son Roderick at this point: It just might be that the intelligence we are searching for has already found us, but judges us being too aggressive and destructive to be trusted, and may choose not to reveal itself (see Ro's profile, same SETI class Nr. 18). Nevertheless, it’s man’s fate to investigate and explore the unknown. So I participate with great enthusiasm in this excellently conceived SETI@home project. Running SETI is also a good computer speed test: my new G5 performs 8 units a day !
