Personal background
Hi, I'm Adam, and I'm a proud member of Geeks Anonymous. ;) HA! Sorry, just had to throw that one out there. I'm your standard 24-year-old guy from western Wisconsin, and as such my sense of humor has suffered somewhat. Right now I'm a full-time paper shuffler in the mail room of a hospital while I attempt to make my way through college. So far I'm working towards a double-major in Procrastination and Sleeping-Too-Much, though I may eventually go for Computer Science if I can get my head screwed on straight.
As for hobbies, I pretty much just do what I want. Sometimes I'll be addicted to my Playstation 2 for a week solid. Other times I'll be doing some various pen/paper RPG or other. Then I'll go through my mountain biking phase and hit just about every trail in the area in rapid succession. And then of course there's my now infamous two-mile walks at 3am when I can't sleep. ;)
Although I could probably think of twelve dozen other things to write here, you're probably not going to read them anyway, are you? Didn't think so. That's ok though, no hard feelings. ;)
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Do I think there's other life out there in this vast universe of ours? Absolutely. Do I think it's advanced enough to communicate? Well on that topic I'm not so certain. After all, assuming life exists on more than one planet in our universe, we must then assume that one race of creatures came into existance before another. I don't think it's any more unreasonable to assume WE are the first intelligent life forms capable of radio communication than it is to assume we're not alone in this universe in the first place. On the flip side, we could also be the youngest race in the universe--the coin does have two sides. (Plus a very large edge--most likely we're somewhere in the middle. Neither oldest nor youngest.)
I believe that we should transmit a beacon of some sort into the heavens. The biggest challenge is deciding WHERE to transmit this signal. I'll not attempt to tackle that problem--that one is best left to comittee. However anything we do transmit should be along the same lines as the information we're looking to receive. Intelligent patterns, for example. Prime numbers, multiples of 9, or even television broadcasts. Anything that indicates deliberate action, rather than random chaos.
I just hope that by adding my measly little computer (which, by the way, I built myself from scrap parts) I might aid the search. It's a daunting task, especially when one considers that in addition to the sheer volume of sky to look at we must also be looking in the right place at the right time. But human history is full of one miraculous occurance after another. Frankly I think the search for other life is one of the greatest endeavours mankind can undergo. And I for one am proud to be a part of it, if only a small part.
