Personal background
I am a 41 yr old self employed space and science fiction fan. I live in Holland, born here, but of a mixed cultural and genetic heritage. I think the internet and space exploration is the best thing to happen to mankind in a long time and I would be severely disappointed if there was no one else out there.

I've always believed we would make contact with another intelligence during my lifetime and as time goes by I still believe it. Ever since I could read I've been captivated by other worlds and the thrill of space trade and travel. Whenever I watch Star Trek or space movies and see those magnificent spaceships I think "I want one of those!", or "I want to go there!" My enthusiasm has never faltered since I was a kid. And I heartily support any space exploration program such as SETI.

Who knows, maybe some day we will have the opportunity to go out into that final frontier. But let's make contact first.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Yes, I think extraterrestrial life exists out there. In all forms and shapes imaginable. The universe is immensely diverse and life has a way of asserting itself, even under the most challenging of circumstances. I find it very hard to believe that our planet is unique in its ability to create and support life, especially since our own history has already shown us that our planet has brought forth and even now contains such a diversity of life forms.

I also think we should try and find out if other intelligent life exists out there. However, I do wonder the wisdom of trying to make contact without knowing what is out there. We could attract life even more aggressive and destructive than ourselves, for example, or make contact with a peaceful alien race whom we would then attack and destroy. Some of humanity may have noble goals such as of peace but ruthless greed is very much a part of our world civilization. Only time will tell, I guess.

I think SETI@home is a great initiative and I run it because it's a program that could take many years even generations and because I think scientific funding, especially space exploration, is too limited to profit-making programs and not enough for the goal of knowledge seeking. It's certainly something that could use all the help it can get because of its sheer size and scope and I am happy to contribute a little.

Great stuff. Keep it going!
