Personal background
Well, I started donating CPU-Power to SETI in 1999. My company bought 30 computers which were used only for DOS-applications. So I decided to use them for SETI. My boss said ok and after a day 30 PC's were crunching seti packets. The sysadmin which took over my job still runs these clients. In my new company I have 4 PC's for my personal pleasure so they run SETI as well. :-)
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Yes, I believe we are not alone (in the dark). It is impossible to say that only one planet develops life in the billions of planets which are out there.

Benefits : Peace ? Technology ? No more hunger ? Something like that.
Danger : If another race finds our planet valuable. They might slave ous ? Not sure about that..

2. No, we shouldn't send a message. IF we discover life on other planets we should be quiet to finally end our wars and stand up as one planet to say a gigantic hello to other civilisations.

3. I run SETI@HOME for my personal pleasure and to help the mankind.
