Profile: Andrew Lester

Personal background
39 years old, British, but have been living in Germany for thelast 10 years.
Occupation: well, sort of confused? I'm a Carpenter/Cabinet maker and a web designer/ developer/ database administrator, and an aspiring Molecular Scientist, but at the moment a cabinet maker, studying with the Open University for a degree in Molecular Science.

Hobbies: Playing Spearhead online, Studying, and developing pointless, rather silly, but pretty web sites, which I normally get bored with after a month or two, delete and make another.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Do I think extraterrestrial life exists?

OF COURSE IT DOES!
The universe is huge, solar systems containing planets which could sustain life are plentiful.
To think that we are the only ones in such a vast universe, is really quite ridiculous, also to assume that we are the most intelligent of all life forms in the universe is even more ridiculous.

Should humans transmit a beacon for others to find?

It’s really quite pointless transmitting a beacon. Any intelligent life capable of receiving the beacon and reacting, would undoubtedly more intelligent that us. Why would any intelligent life form want to visit or make contact with a planet full of ignorant barbarians? We humans have no place in the universe until we can manage to take care of our own planet, instead of destroying it. We cannot even live together on a planet as a species, without using vast resources to develop better ways to kill each other. NO! a beacon is not such a good idea, we are not ready to make contact with other civilisations.

Why do you run SETI@home?

Well, for reasons outline above, this is the only way we could possibly confirm life elsewhere in the universe. A chance reception of a signal, would really be quite something! However if we ever did actually come accross a stray signal, the sender will probably not want anything to do with us anyway.
