Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Extraterrestrial Life?

I ain't so sure whether extraterrestrial life forms do exist. Life is a pretty complicated thing. And if there indeed is life somewhere out in the universe, it doesn't necessarily have to be more than an amoeba, bacteria or similar. However, if that should be the case it can only be beneficial for man, or at least some people able to handle such a fact, to know. I do not believe "aliens" could ever be a threat, as Hollywood movies have imagined before, for first of all, if existent, they'd be pretty dang far away and most and would most likely have bigger problems than to extinguish the human race. At any rate, if they wanted to do so and were capable (which I do absolutely not believe in), us knowing of their existence could only be positive.
The only negative effect I could imagine would be the reaction of the public if intelligent extraterrestrial life was discovered (the only extraterrestrial life SETI could discover - at least I haven't seen an amoeba emitting radio waves). So a possible discovery should not be made public. But really who can tell?
2. Beacons?

I do not see a danger in transmitting beacons. A higher developed life form is likely to know of our existence, a similar form of life would not be a danger. Thriving for knowledge is a natural human drive, so why not try to contact extraterrestrial life? The information send should be exactly that what we'd be interested in if we found another form of life. What do they look like? Where are they from? What kind of technology do they have? What senses do they have / How do they see the world or universe? Do they have art or music?
3. Why SETI@home?

Because I am in favor of the idea of trying to discover new things. Extraterrestrial life would be a brand new discovery. I do have unused CPU-processing-power and a constant broadband internet connection, why not share for an at least somewhat reasonable cause?
