Personal background
Ok, here we go, the reason why I started doing SETI work units.... I saw a UFO when i was ten. I have seen lots more since. I was a member of the Lancaster UFO network. Being a photographer i managed to get a picture of a UFO. It was classified as a UFO by UFO MAGAZINE. It made the front page of a local newspaper and was in a few oother papers. Nick Pope (the man from the Ministry of defense) took my picture onto national TV.
I heard about this SETI programe before it was actually up and running and couldn't wait to get a computer to join in...
So, after learning that we are all made from star dust and that there are more stars than there are grains of sand on this planet, I just had to help.
Perhaps i will be the one to make the first discovery of life on another planet.
If not, then I wish you all good luck in being the first....
Bon chance mes ami.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
YES, ET life definitely exists...without any doubt.
We have already been discovered and we have the evidence here on earth and perhaps with the face on mars. Our history is not complete. We have huge gaps in all our cultures. Our religious beliefs are so diverse that none of them are right. If you were an ancient culture and a being from another planet came down from the stars, what would you think he/she/it was? A god perhaps?
With no offence to Christian beliefs, I give you this: Mary was a virgin yet became pregnant.... Given a child by the 'supreme being'...
How would we, in todays society, re-create this 'miracle'?
Artificial insemination.
Was Mary abducted by a peace loving race?

Possible benefits can be far beyond anything we might be expecting.
regarding the dangers, well, perhaps we might make contact with a 'war like' race. Try to imagine all the religions 'up in arms' against any kind of visitation from another planet. Maybe the governments are afraid of a total society collapse.

Yes we should transmit a beacon and i suggest using a 'wide aray' laser that contains a message. The laser light directs anyone to it's origin, so you don't need to send a map. It also allows instant verification of an advanced culture by being 'man made' and not a natural phenomena, i.e. a pulsar. ithink the best type of message to send (which is embedded in the laser light) would be images of our evolution, our condensed yet complete history. Let the reciever(s) make their own decisions about us, rather than travel millions of light years only to be dissapointed in a race thatlikes to destroy itself and everything around it.

my only suggestion is that we, as a race, should have a publicly funded space programme that allows for ideas, freedom of information, groups of people to design and build cheap but reliable space transportation. We are far too slow in progressing outwards. NASA has the market cornered and should do more to help the human race.
