Personal background
I'm a 46 year old male living in Western New Mexico about 80 miles from the VLA (very large array) radio telescope. I own a small computer business here and at the present time have 2 - 3 machines running SETI@home software.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. I'm a firm believer that we're not the only intelligent life in the universe. To me, it would be a sign of ignorance to even imagine that we could be the only intelligent life in the bounds of space.

2. As far as transmitting a beacon for other lifeforms to find, we'd have probably a 50/50 chance that a hostile race would pick up on it and decide they like our planet better than we do and decide that we're just an annoyance and kill us off or worse yet, enslave us for their benefit. Obviously, if their technology is advanced enough to come here, it's more advanced than ours and we would essentially be helpless to an interstellar attack.

3. I run SETI@home because, like every other human on the planet, I would like to see some confirmation of extraterrestrial intelligent life. I think it may be a while before we actually find anything since any other relatively intelligent civilization wouldn't be transmitting any sort of communication beacon unless they were confident that they had the upper hand in any kind of conflict it may cause.
