Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
I wonder about the value of receiving a signal from a distant star system. It seems to me that a signal received from a star system thousands or millions of light years from earth would take thousands or millions of years to get here. Then, by the time we formulated a reply and sent it, it would take that many more thousands or millions of years to get back to the source. Worst case senario, the society which sent the signal would no longer exist, or they would not remember it was ever sent. Or possibly their star system no longer exists. Heck, our sun could go nova between messages. Half the stars in the sky could no longer be there, and it would be millenia before we would even see the dead stars' explosions. But, I still do this because I'm curious to see what everyone would do if we got a signal from an intelligent ET source. |
