Personal background
I am a retired manager of a housing program in Santa Clara County, California. I have a wife who is a clinical social worker and a 17-year-old son about to graduate from high school and I just turned 60. I’ve had a long-term interest in astronomy since I was about 13 or 14 years old. Currently, I have several telescopes ranging is size from 10 inches in diameter down to 3 inches in diameter. However, I’m embarrassed to admit that because of my extreme dislike of chilly nights I’m more of an armchair or computer console astronomer than a very active observer or astrophotographer. Thank the heavens for magazines like Astronomy and Sky and Telescope and for web sites like Skyview and Aladin or my amateur astronomy days would practically be over.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
As far as the issue of extraterrestrial intelligence, like the vast majority of SETI at Home subscribers I am also a “believer.” I believe that the odds are definitely in our favor. If the conditions on an extra-solar planet are similar to those on the earth and if those conditions have persisted for a sufficient period of time, I believe that life and ultimately intelligent life will evolve. Even if those conditions are rare, I think with 25 to 100 billion stars in a galaxy and 100 billion or so galaxies in the observable universe and no telling how amount planets circling those stars, I think that the odds are still pretty darn good. Also, if we earthlings figured out how to make and use radios and the principles of physics are the same though out the universe then chances are good there are some other intelligent creatures out there that are using radios. I also believe that like the relatively recent discovery of extra solar planets, astronomers looked and looked for years and found nothing, but after the first one was found they seem to be finding a new one practically every day. Now, the remaining question is – what took them so long?
