Personal background
I am a "Baby Boomer" who has been interested in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence my whole life. (Remember Chariots of the Gods?) I can remember as a child of 11 or 12 and living in Los Angeles in the mid 50's and witnessing a UFO while camping in the desert with a Boy Scout Troop. I had woke up in the early morning about 3am and went outside (we were sleeping in a Tent). As I looked up into the sky I seen 3 objects that I never forgot. It changed my life. I currently work for a Water district as a Control & Communications specialist and work extensively with radio communications and data acquisition from remote water facilities (System Control And Data Acquisition, SCADA). I build and configure computer systems as a hobby and do some low level programming. I love to fish, mainly saltwater and just recently returned from an Alaska adventure. I live in So. California and spent 4 years in the US Navy during the Vietnam War.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Of course it does, it is not a question of "is there?" but one of "how many?” I am not sure that they will be discovered with the current methods utilized, but it is certainly worth continuing and we may get a preview of their existence via SETI. If I were part of an Alien Society would I want to make contact with the Earths inhabitants? I would think twice. The benefits would far out-weigh the dangers. This is of course assuming a superior intelligence with a similar evolutionary path, there is not much sense in traveling thousands of light years to conquer or destroy a civilization that cannot hold a candle to their intelligence or technology, for what? The fact that I believe they are already visiting us and have not made contact speaks volumes to the above argument. Specific benefits? They would be beyond our wildest dreams. Send a Beacon? We need to do more of this kind of thing with RF and here is where SETI is in the forefront. I will leave it to the mathematicians & Scientists to determine what should be sent, but lets keep the politicians out of it."Why Run SETI@home?” It is an exciting idea and concept! Millions of computers doing work for a common project and goal, WOW. I am new to the project so my thoughts are new as well, but I feel that if one looks at the progress of Radio Frequency technology in the last 50 years you can see some very dramatic trends and changes. It is possible that we are looking in the wrong places for these RF indications of an Alien Society by applying our thoughts about RF to the search. While spread spectrum transmissions may be more inefficient as we know it, it is certainly the way communications are going today. With the increased demands on radio frequencies and licensing, we as a society are putting greater and greater demands on RF usage. Maybe we should be looking outside the box here? Where will our RF communications be 5000 years? What will we be doing with RF? Will RF even exist? In the mean time, keep those WU coming.
