Personal background
My name is Richard, and I’ve been running Seti@Home for quite a few years now. I’m currently a consultant working on a Convergence project for a large international media company. (In fact, I have been applying some "distributed computing" techniques in building a global Content Delivery System for video and other data.) As you might expect, given my interest in SETI, I am very interested in science and science fiction, and my home is overrun with books and videos of that genre. However, my hobby also goes off into something of a tangent… I am fascinated with the subject of fear and horror, and am an amateur ghost hunter/skeptic. As a refection of that fascination, and in the process of collecting data, I run a website called ScaryPlace.com where I invite visitors to answer the question "What Are You Afraid Of?"
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Opinions about SETI and SET@Home… Hmm… Well, in answer to the question about the effects of discovering that "We Are Not Alone", I have to disagree with a large number of writers and pundits who have forecast that it would have a devastating impact on humanity. We need only to look back into our known history to see the pattern repeated time and time again and to realize that we always adapt and set our horizons further out. We can see multiple repetitions of where an isolated human society may consider themselves to be all there is to the world and that they are central to its operations, only to discover that there is yet another city beyond the "un-crossable" waters. Sometimes this forced change of perspective is brought about by visitors arriving from afar, and sometimes it is brought about by one of our own asking "What lies beyond?" and finding out. Thus the pattern repeats and expands. History also tells us that there will be a period of disbelief, cries of "heresy", and possibly even violence. But ultimately there would be acceptance and incorporation into the general perspective. Especially as soon as we can figure out how to make money out of the new reality!
