Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I've come accross SETI@Home when I was on a work stint in Singapore. I downloaded their program and have been trying to run it as much as I can. Well, coming to the point of extraterrestrial life exisiting in this universe; I love to quote the line from "Contact" - "If it doesn't, its an awful waste of space...". Everytime I think about our star system, our neighbouring star systems, the galaxy, the MILLIONS of stars, it is definitely possible for life to flourish in a planet other then our own. At what kind of intelligence level, I can't say, but hey, we are just couple of thousand years old. Life on a planet may be a coincidence of "LUCKY" factors, but if it can happen once, it sure can happen again and again..

Five years ago we weren't even sure if other stars had planets around them, but 5 years later we do have substantial proof that they do. Its just a matter of time before we encounter our first habitable planet and our first extraterrestrial bretheren. er, fellow life forms; thanks to the efforts of organisations such as SETI and numerous others plus all the individuals contributing to these organisations with their time, money and of-course CPU cycles!

I don't think we need to specifically send a beacon as we have been transmitting TV/Radio and other broadcasting media signals since the dawn of 20th century. if we do have to send a message I am sure it would have to be on the lines of mathematics or basic element structures as we understand it...there are so many other factors we have to consider too.

I support SETI because I can! To some this might be a pointless excersise without tangible benefits but hey, Rome wasn't built in a day. Our need to explore and understand, our ability to be curious and do something constructive is very unique. We may have numerous problems that need solving on this planet; life that has to be discovered here, but there is a whole universe out there...
