Profile: Dougie

Personal background
I was born in the Scottish Border country in 1949 and have spent most of my life in Scotland, living now in a small town called Dumbarton on the River Clyde (where all those famous ships were built) close to the Bonnie Banks o’ Loch Lomond. I have (as of February 2002) clocked up over 2,300 hours of seti@home, and just turned my hundredth block today. None of it will show on my record, alas, as I had to change my email address – got the certificate first, though!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I’ve always been a fan of the late Carl Sagan; his death felt like a personal loss, but I don’t share all of his optimism about extraterrestrial intelligence. I think that primitive life will be common, but intelligent life will be very rare, and the nearest very distant – perhaps too distant for contact.

Still, I love the idea of all us little people, all around the world, with our crummy little home computers gnawing our way through all that data, like ants eating an elephant. How wonderful it would be if one of us got that signal..and if there’s any justice…..

Should we transmit a beacon? Yes, if we warn that we are a dangerously murderous species - that's only fair. We could include some music by J S Bach to balance the picture a little.
