Personal background

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
ETs exists, I have no doubth there. NTIs are probably around as well, although not around here. At the present level of technology, a human discovery of a Non Terrestrial Intelligence is likely to be achieved through projects such as this. Depending on the aliens knowledge of our history, however, they might make an effort not to send any signals our way. I we do make contact, we would be forced to change our outlook on life as we know it and our place in the universe.

Transmit a beacon? Yes and no. If helpful in establishing a contact, yes, but then what if the wrong kind of contact shows up on our doorstep? If we send, how can we be sure the reciever can decode and understand the message? We can't. It may be enough to have a signal modulated in such a way that it is easily identified against the background noise of space.

I run SETI@home because it is an opportunity to participate in our conquest of space.
