Personal background
I’m an 18 year-old student from rural Eastern Oregon who basically lives for computers. Me and a few of my friends got an idea a while ago to build a server just for fun that would be expandable to do whatever it is that we could think of it doing. Currently Zed (the host-name for the server) is running dual PIII 667’s clocked at 900 Mhz and has 3 slaves running dual Celeron 366’s clocked at 550 Mhz. The slaves (hostnames Slave01, Slave02, and Slave03 respectively) run as parallel processors to the master ZED. Basically what I’m saying is that there is noting better to do out here other than build useless server arrays and search for EIT. I’m also the systems administrator for a private non-profit business that helps handicapped people all over Eastern Oregon. I’ll be looking for work this summer so if anyone from Eastern Oregon, or the Columbia Gorge Area needs some help, please send me an e-mail.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I really don’t have much of an opinion about ETI. When I look at the sky, I see light that took millions and possibly billions of years to get here. If we were to find life, would that really mean anything? The signals we would find would be similar to the ones that we began sending into space in the 1930’s when radio was first invented. There would be no chance for two-way communication. However, I think that if we did find the signs of life somewhere in the universe, it would at least answer the question that life is possible on distant worlds. It may be gone by the time we receive the signal, but at some point in time, it was there.
