Personal background
I live in Orange, CA in a 100 year old house which I am slowly restoring.

I would travel to the stars if the path were available.

I also teach some computer classes at Chapman University.

I'm the programmer of Memorize-It http://www.side8.com. Create your own flashcards on any subject. You too can create flashcards to memorize the latest seti candidates.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
My thoughts about seti.
Does life exist?
I believe that intelligent life does exist in the universe. If the universe is infinite and one semi-intelligent lifeform (humans) has evolved, then it's infinitly possible that thousands of intelligent lifeforms exist.

Should we broadcast a beacon?
I seriously doubt that when we find other life forms we will be able to coexist with them. We have too much history of intolerance to different cultures let alone creatures. Call it cynical, but I'm continually disappointed in my fellow man. I don't believe a beacon is the best idea, at least until we settle our own differences.

I think that the answer to today's environmental, political and economic problems lies in the over population of the planet. I don't have faith that the world's religions would agree to birth control as they currently have a policy of increasing their following through an increased birthrate. The solution to the problems lies in developing a new frontier to release the excess population. The largest percent of our scientific research should be devoted to this task. The $75 billion we spent on invading Iraq (and the $25 billion a year for "rebuilding (the oil pipeline)" would have been much better spent in this endeavor.
