Personal background
Who, me? I'm noone important really. I'm 19 years old, still in school, going into comp sci to become a programmer. Hobbies are programming, electronics, LEGO, reading(preferrably fantasy/sci-fi/furry, or comics), and I have sometimes tried my hand at drawing and even rarer at writing. Latter two I'm not any good at. I spend a lot of my time on the Internet or at least in front of a computer, and I have 2 laptops so I can generally do it when I feel like it(unless something else comes in the way, like being in class or out in the rain). I usually ride my bike to and from school, whenever possible. Here in Norway, it happens to be impossible now and then though, due to snow or ice. I consider myself a fairly nice person overall, although I do have my evil moments now and then. No picture for now, maybe later. Anyway, gotta go - school is busy - maybe more some other time.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe there are life on other planets than this one. I've got no idea how advanced or what they're like, but I believe they are there. Just look at the odds. There are an unfathomable number of stars out there. Even if just a fraction of these have planets, it is still an unfathomably big number. And even though just a fraction of these might be the origins of life, there are still so many that it would be extremely unlikely that only one should get it. As for how we'll discover them, I don't know. They might very well discover us first. Benefits and dangers I don't want to go into here - there are quite a lot of possibilities, but one never knows anyway. As for the beacon - well, if we don't do it, then why should anyone else? And if every just listens, and noone sends, then how are we going to find one another? As for what information, well, I'm no e.t. expert, but I suppose we should send a little bit of info about us, and the planet, solar system etc... But the first thing would have to be an intelligence check signal. E.g. something like the commonly-used-in-movies prime number sequence. The amount of other information would be limited too, seeing as we have no idea of how to "talk" with them. And I think our sequence should be long enough to distinguish that they're prime numbers, but not too long to continue - that could be a nice way of telling that whomever weren't just repeating it. I run SETI@Home to help in maybe finding those other peoples that are out there. It's a nice effort, and quite clever.
