Profile: Richard M Lawn

Personal background
My name is Richard Lawn, and I will be presenting a series of short articles called "SETI Perspectives" on the SETI@home web site. I majored in astronomy at Harvard College and attended graduate school in astronomy at the University of California, Berkeley before switching scientific fields and obtaining a Ph. D. in molecular and cellular biology from the University of Colorado, Boulder. I was lucky to be part of the pioneering efforts to isolate human genes for scientific study and for the discovery of medical treatments as a post-doctoral fellow at CalTech, Senior Scientist at Genentech, Professor at Stanford Medical School and Vice President of Discovery Research at CV Therapeutics. Most recently I worked at the gene therapy company, Audentes. I continued to follow developments in astronomy through those years and now have to opportunity to participate directly in the SETI program, that marvelous intersection of astronomy and the life sciences.
