Personal background |
Hi, I'm Rolf and I'm living in Cologne/Germany (Europe). I was born in 1963. Since my childhood I'm interested in astronomy and physics. Although I never studied physics I like to read books about Einstein's theories and cosmology. Of course I'm also interested in space exploration.
Beside this I like to play guitar in my rock music group. A further important hobby for me is traveling. For occupation I'm working in an insurance company as an IT engineer.
For seti@home I'm using three PCs: a Pentium II 400 on Win98 or Linux, a AMD Athlon 1400 on Win98 and a Pentium 4 1700 on WinXP. This three PCs are connected by a LAN. I'm calculating workunits since 1999, but only now my quantity of workunits is increasing since I've got my new and faster computers. |
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
Yes, I'm sure there is extraterrestrial life somewhere out in this amazing big universe. But I'm also a pessimist in this case. I belive there is only one civilization in our galaxy milky way at this time: this is the one on planet earth. Although it is a fact that scientists found many biological molecules in interstellar space, I think it is hard for life to develop. Especially for intelligent life. It would be great I'm wrong. It should be very interesting to have contact with a foreign intelligence. But I don't think our milky way is full of life. For developing life there must be so many special conditions that I do not think there is very much of it in our galaxy.
But I think also seti@home (and other projects) are very important to give an answer to mankind if we are alone or not. But there is only a very, very, very little chance to discover intelligent life during the existing of mankind. But I think also humans should transmit signals into space (which they do unintentional since more then 100 years as humans begun to transmit radio and tv signals).
Although I'm very pessimistic humans would ever discover ETL, seti@home (and other projects) should be go on. The answer of existing life out of earth is one of the most important questions of mankind. |
