And there are those that are getting Guppies, but don't like them for their returns so are ghosting them (or other measures) so they can get Arecibo work

I don't understand people who do this. Are these fictional Internet credits really so important that they spend hours ghosting WU's and leaving other crunchers hanging out to dry?

Very unethical. Me, I just turn my old laptop on, start BOINC, and check it once a week to make sure it's not totally dead.

So far my experience with nVidia drivers on Linux is you get it to work once, then don't touch anything again.

I've got some cheap Walmart tablet that doesn't even get warm to the touch when running all four cores flat out. Battery sits at ~30C and the CPU at ~52C from what I can tell. It's been running for 16hrs and it hasn't even spit a finished WU out yet. I'm not worried since it pulls not even 5W and is just sitting under my bed for now, but heat is for sure not an issue (ambient temps average 21C)

It's only an A7 core, though, and barely spits out 1GFLOP. I'd expect the newer (and more expensive) phones and tablets to do more and heat more.

$200, only 150W TDP, and greater than 5 TFLOPS of performance. This might be one cheap beast for us crunchers!

Thanks Brian and Sidewinder.

I'm not too worried about the computer, since I was only going to run one Pi and it's basically a burner system at this point anyway. I was actually considering tapping straight off the PSU's 5v rail and making a dedicated set of charging/Pi ports, since there's obviously plenty of amperage there.

Sad that the onboard GPU isn't used yet! It seems like it's where most all of the power is. I'm not worried about upping my RAC, more just for spitting out a few WU's here and there.

I think I'll order up a Pi3 and a heatsink in the next week or so. I've got a couple server side projects that would be much more efficient to run on a Pi instead of my power-hungry Athlon, besides just for tinkering and/or BOINCing. For the sake of conversation: What distros do you use on your Pis?

So for those who already have a Pi going - how's your average power consumption? What do you use to power it?

I'm considering picking up a couple Pi 3's and running them off the USB2 ports one of my computers has to give it a little boost for the power it's already using while crunching. I'm just not sure the USB2 bus will supply enough power to run one, or maybe two, of these Pi's simultaneously under a high load.

Also, does BOINC utilize the GPU on board? The spec sheet says it has a 24 GFLOP general purpose compute ability and I'd rather not have that go to waste.

ARM processors are inherently inefficient at compute tasks like SETI@home since they're designed for low power consumption, not number crunching. At only 1.20 GFLOPS I don't really see you gaining much by using even multiple old phones. Then again I run BOINC on an old Athlon 64, and the phones only use a couple watts each, so each to his own :-P

You don't have to have a SIM card or anything, the phones just need a WiFi connection to the internet. As for the battery, you can remove it and run it strictly on the charger without much issue assuming your charger has a high enough amperage rating. Of course assuming your phones have removable batteries.

A good rule of thumb for chargers is that it needs to put out at least 1 amp (5 watts), but more is better.

I say Nay... Win10 forced an update on my parent's machine, failed midway through, destroyed the bootloader on its way out and left me with a mess that took 6 hours to fix.

There's definitely times that Microsoft makes me want to go back to Windows XP, and I keep a Ubuntu dualboot for a reason.

While it does produce some points, it's pushing my CPU over it's thermal limit when running other CPU projects and the Nvidia GPU projects as well. without the iGPU running, I can utilize my laptop much more effectively (and yes i'm moving to a desktop this summer).

Hello, everyone, just recently I've finally gotten back into BOINC processing. To get straight to the point: Has anyone had any experience with the avg. production from a single R9 280x? It doesn't matter that much, My mind's already made up for my new PC build this summer, but I'm curious as to see if anyone else here has this particular card (most people seem to either have Nvidia or much older cards) and what they think of it. Gonna also be paired with a i5 4670K.
