Sorry to hear about the problem. I was having this problem several months ago and while not running BOINC. The strange screen you seen could be the default video drivers in windows. My issue turned out to be an IRQ error after installing 24 gigs of memory. I could go into the device manager and disable the GPU’s and then re-enable them and all was fine. But, that did nothing to stop the problem from happening again. Trying to force certain IRQ addresses in regedit did not work either. I figure possibly because the BIOS is setting them up before the windows software does. I then moved one of the GPU’s to another slot and the problem has gone away.

I use the heat generated by crunching to run a turbine which produces enough electricity to run the computer.

It would be a perpetual motion machine if it was not for one of them laws on thermodynamics and a few others that keep getting in the way.

:=)

Gary you pretty much nailed it, especially on the higher bands.

I am not a big gamer anyways. To be more accurate, I do not use the snooze feature, but rather the suspend option when boinc starts to get in the way.

Thanks Miep. That is exactly what I do, I snooze all of the crunching. I still have not received any WU's to run further tests. I have found one cruncher that is a poster here. That cruncher has a similar set up to mine except that he is using two GTX 570's. This cruncher has over 600 errors while running lunatics. I may send him a PM.

Perryjay, while it is possible that the PSU is having some problems, I have seen no indication of it. When I built the computer a few months back I did some rather extensive tests of the PSU and video cards. Besides a variation of ohms law, I ran a program called OCCTPT. This free download program will seriously tax the system. So much so that there is even a warning about burning up the PSU in some of the tests.

Miep, another good suggestion. I did have the computer on for quite some time when I ran the tests from above. I was also tinkering with a game of starcraft as well. I have not received any new WU's since yesterday for the video cards so I have not been able to test your theory. As soon as I get some, I will run the test and report back here. As for the driver, I have heard about the issues with it downclocking the GPU's. I have not seen this while doing WU's for SETI. I have seen it while in the game of starcraft with one of the GPU's. It dropped from 825mhz to 405mhz. The second card did not drop at all. The downclocking was also not noticed during gameplay.

I finally got some gpu WU's so I figured I would give it a shot again. Mostly to see how fast the gpu's could bust out the work. I set it up to do 2 WU's per gpu(.5 setting in the app file). I had 6 to edit that way in the app file.

I then got a number of "Error while computing" messages. I do not know if I did some thing wrong or if this is the norm. I did do some searching for other members and noticed that one member I found had a ton of the same errors.

Thanks for the replies. The version I installed last night is "Win64 Lunatics' Unified Installer v0.37". The install worked perfectly thanks to some past posts explaining how to edit the app_info file.

Here is what I have noticed so far.

The GPU's used to say 0.81 CPU + 1.00 NVidia gpu while doing work. That has changed to 0.04 CPU + 1.00 NVidia gpu.

When both gpu's were running, I was only crunching with 11 cores. Now after the install it is crunching with all 12.

The gpu usage has dropped as well. They were running around 50 to 60 percent on average. Now they are staying in the middle 40's. They are not down clocking. I am watching their speed and memory usage while using a program called MSI afterburner. I will have to come up with a way to check their current speed with their past performance before lunatics was installed.

Lastly, I did run into a few errors in a couple of WU's. They are my fault though. I was playing with the app file and changing the number(.1 .2 .8) around.

Is there any benefit to installing and running lunatics if a person decides not to run two WU’s per GPU?

I ask because right now I have some what of a wimpy PSU unit(800 watts continuous and 1000 watts peak). When I ran the two GTX 580’s with two WU’s, per card they were drawing amps in the high 40’s and mid to low 50’s. With one WU per card, the amperage dropped an easy 10 to 14 amps per card. At this point in time, I really do not wish to over stress the PSU.

I have not tried it yet either. To me, it seems like they remove the best part of the last version when they come out with a new version of windows. For example, why on earth did they get rid of the photo editing capabilities in windows photo gallery? It was soooo convenient to just hit the “fix” button to brighten up a picture stored on your hard drive. Or does any one remember when you went to store a site in your favorites, you had all of the directories closed? For some reason when they went from XP to Vista and carried it over to windows 7 they decided to have these all open up which makes it quite difficult when you try to save a website. Now don’t even get me started on the windows live mail thing.

So far so good here with the 580's. I have them running in SLI of course. I also have them overclocked slightly to 825mhz for the core clock and 2104mhz for the memory clock. I have been watching them using a program called MSI Afterburner. Even with repeated stops and starts, no downclocking issues have been noticed with driver 270.61.

I have a very similar problem happening as well. One machine that is using BOINC version 6.10.60 seems to do ok for the most part. At times it has trouble getting new WU’s. It was having trouble uploading completed WU’s until a few days ago.

The other computer that is using BOINC version 6.12.26 has a really difficult time getting new WU’s. After having it sit idle for nearly the last 4 or 5 days, I decided today to start another project. I did not want to do this. The new project, Rosetta, sent WU’s just fine and the computer has been working on them all day. It has yet to receive a completed WU download from SETI. If I am lucky, it will receive some but the download always stops. I am still awaiting for it to download a few from this morning. Unless I sit there with it and keep hitting “retry” for hours, it takes an extremely long time to get them which is why I gave up and started the new project.

I have two ways to connect to the internet. One is a verizon card, the other is a virgin mobile card. I have tried both with no difference.

The computer has been crunching for Rosetta all day today as it has not received a WU from SETI. Actually it did finish downloading one WU this morning, but that WU download started some time yesterday and was only 366 kbs. Plus I sat there with it and kept hitting retry. It just bothered me having the computer sitting idle for most of its time. Almost like showing up to a neighbors house and saying “I am here to work”. After standing at the front door alone for 3 days with nothing to do, I went to the next neighbor and have been put to work.

I have two machines that have sat idle for the past 24 hours. This morning one received about a dozen cuda WU and completed them a few minutes later. Not able to upload. Other then that, the computers have sat idle. I did try to start another project but kept getting the "communications deferred" just like the seti project.

Thanks VW. I just built this beast about two months ago so that "newness factor" is still with me. Plus it is my main computer. As for the Corsair H50 water cooler, I have fans connected in a push pull configuration around the radiator. For those that might be wondering, the case is a cooler master HAF which has excellent air flow.
