1) Message boards : Number crunching : rising and falling gpu usage while crunching[solved] (Message 1357941)

I have two 580's in one of my PC's and had the same problem as you did. When seti would send shorties, the gpu's would run fine at 99%. Otherwise I ran into your issue. I tried 1,2,3, and 4 wu's per gpu. I finally settled on 3. But I had to drop a few cores(6-HT). I now run 3 gpu wu's per card and 6 cpu cores. GPU's run at 98-99% and cpu usage is around 60 or so. My cpu utilizes hyper-threading which I think is the issue. I have not tried it with HT off.

My other machines without HT has no issues at all. The GTX 550's run 3 wu's at a time and all of the cpu. Usage is 99% for gpu and 100% for cpu.

For anyone wondering if dropping a cpu core will help in their machine, simply suspend cpu work while noting gpu usage.

Good luck.

I agree, I much prefer the old way better. It was so much nicer. I am also one of those with a slow connection speed. The new changes take much longer to load.

I like the idea and wish you the best of luck with it. Some other variables to take into consideration would be the signal strength leaving the antenna(not the power of the transmitter), the type of signal it is. For example, a CW or Morse code transmission mode which occupies a much smaller bandwidth then phone(AM, FM SSB, etc.) can be transmitted with much less power and be heard through much more noise then the above modes. Equally important is the frequency of the transmitted signal. What I mean by that is not how often the signal is being transmitted, but rather on what frequency it is being transmitted on. An AM broadcast signal that is heard on your car radio would never make it the distance, but at the frequency of light it would. A good place to start might be with light pollution and how bright a certain star has to be before it is observed. Then work the frequency and math down for a certain type of antenna and see what you come up with.

There are a lot more things to consider such as the polarization of the signal. I would think it would be circular rather then horizontal or vertical but do not know for sure. The noise in the receiver circuitry and so on.

I get them as well from time to time. A few days ago I received a boatload of them. They do not seem like they hurt any thing as far as I know.

Good question. I can not help with the reduced time, but I can chime in on my two 580's which are the same GPU's that you are using.

I had mine running at a core clock speed of 825mhz, a shader speed of 1650mhz(it is always double the core clock), and a memory clock speed of 2104mhz. At this configuration I was getting an error every so often in the work units(WU's). Roughly about 5 or 6 a day. Not to bad but it bothered me none the less as I was fearful that the increased speed in doing WU's was being eaten away by them bad WU's.

So I dropped the speed down and started working my way back up again. The core clock speed is now at 820mhz which brings the shader speed to 1640 mhz. I have also been increasing the memory clock speed which is now at 2165mhz and so far I have zero bad WU's. I plan on bumping this up over time until I find the point that I am getting errors again. At which point I will drop it back down. Each card is a little different so your results may be different then mine. I do expect that they will be some what close though.

During the time that I am around the computer I run two WU's at a time which equates to between 80 and 95 percent and temps in the 60's and low 70's. When I am away I cut it back down to one WU per card.

17) Message boards : Number crunching : Pending Credit -> Task Counts???? (Message 1141694)

State: All (7752) | In progress (5606) | Pending (1263) | Valid (818) | Invalid (2) | Error (63)

Slightly off topic, but I have found that the tasks from above to be often off. For example, check your stats, upload a few hundred completed tasks, hit the "update" button, and once done check your stats again. It might show where you have uploaded around 50. Watch it for a few hours and them other tasks seem to never show up.
