21) Message boards : Number crunching : statistics question (Message 1639976)

Post:
Is "BOINC Statistics for the WORLD!" down? For the last month or more I've been getting the following when I try to access it:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: str_split() in /home/setisy/public_html/stats/boinc-individual.php(1) : regexp code(1) : eval()'d code(1) : regexp code on line 1

No big deal -- I can live without it. Just wondering if they're down or if my computer is somehow screwed up?

I know it's sacrilege to ask this, but the last word we had was that the database rebuild was to be completed on Saturday morning, Pacific time. It's now Monday morning Pacific time. Can you please give us an update?

Thanks!

The news is welcome Eric, but I still think that both News and Technical News threads shouldn't be open for just everyone to have a general discussion in as that would stop those that are to lazy to read through all the "thank you" posts (and other stupid crap) just to get the info that they need without having to ask stupid questions that have already been answered because they're to lazy to read through everything (I'm sure that you and the other guys know how thankful we are for these updates without us having to say so). ;-)

If someone wants to ask a question, surely they can do that it the Number Crunching or in Questions & answers sections.

Cheers.

I agree completely, Wiggo. Maybe someone could start a "Thanks" thread for everyone wanting to express their appreciation so it would be easier to find actual status information in threads like this.

On a slightly different note, all the AP V7 tasks I've downloaded have a ridiculously long estimated time (150:14:34). The actual run time is about 5:30. I assumed at first that the estimated times would straighten themselves out over time, but I have now completed 185 tasks, yet the inflated estimated times remain the same.

Increasing my work buffer to 10,10 days does little to help me get tasks since the scheduler thinks each one's going to take over 6 days to complete.

Is this a bug, or is there something I configured wrong?

The only documentation i know about that was posted on Vypers Blog:
http://vyper.kafit.se/wp/

Under the name: Running different Nvidia architectures optimal in same host with seti@home and other BOINC projects.

His target is to use two different GPUs on the same host, but you could adapt it to do what you ask for.

But be aware, is intended to use only by advanced users, and very few users could help you with that.

Thank you, Sir! I will give it a try, after backing up everything.

Post:
There is a way, if you run more than one instance of Boinc on the host, you could set the buffer for each project in separate but be aware, that is not an easy task to do and sure only for advanced users.

Is there any documentation on how to do this? It sounds like the answer.

Thanks!

The only thing i can think of is giving other projects a bigger resource share.
The work buffer is for all projects.

So you can set seti to 100 and the other projects to 300 for example and see how it works.

Thanks for the input. At first glance I don't see how resource share will do any good since seti and the other projects don't compete for resources -- seti being cpu only and the others being gpu only. The problem is having 5 or more days worth of gpu stuff to do and having only 3 days to do it in.

I'll give it resource share a try though. Can't hurt! Thanks.

Like many SETI users I prefer to keep my minimum work buffer size rather large due to the infrequency of astropulse generation. But some of the other projects I crunch have a 3-day deadline.

Is there any way for me to set Boinc's work buffer size to 3 days or less for those projects and have a higher value for SETI? I have seti set for CPU only and the other projects are GPU only.

Thanks!

I just started getting a notification saying "your app_info.xml file doesn't have a useable version of SETI@HOME v7."

This probably doesn't belong here, but I don't know where else to put it.

I've got an old WU marked "completed, waiting for validation" that has been validated by 2 other hosts that received credit. Since 2 hosts are marked as valid prior to mine I can understand not getting credit for the task, but why is it still on my "Validation pending" task list? Will it ever leave that list?

Please disregard my previous post. I didn't read the thread thoroughly enough to see that somebody finally realized it was the Identify Protection feature of AVG that was doing the complaining -- not the virus scanning features.

My bad.

Using AVG Free, I got the following:

Threat: General behavioral detection
Object name: c:\ProgramData\Boinc\projects\setiathome.berkeley.edu\AP6_win_x86_SSE2_OpenCL_NV_r1843.exe
Severity: Medium
State: Secured
Identified by: Identity Protection
Date: 6/20/2013, 8:59:03 AM

Although it was complaining about the Lunatics version I wonder if it's the same problem being discussed.

NOTE: It was the Identity Protection feature that complains about the program -- not the AV scanner.

Post:
The post you recommended reading DOES explain why V7 is slower. It does NOT explain why the resulting credits given are so much lower.

Example 1: my GTX670 GPU
A typical AP wu takes about 1 hour and grants about 700 credits. A typical V7 wu takes about 15 minutes and grants about 100 credits, or around 400 credits per hour.
Example 2: CPU only
A typical AP wu takes about 13 hours and grants about 700 credits, or about 2200 credits per day. A typical V7 wu takes about 3.5 hours and grants about 100 credits, or about 685 credits per day.

They used to be about even, but now APs rack up more than twice as much credit per hour of crunching than the V7 apps.

That's the gripe -- not the fact that it takes longer.

Kudos: Everyone involved in the colo transfer. It's hard to tell the xfer rate I'm actually getting since the downloads I've seen disappear too fast (that's NOT a gripe) but they appear to be 1500 KB/s or faster.
Gripes: Me, for thinking you guys didn't care about our xfer rates.

I'll be making another donation with my next paycheck.

It looks like I'm back to not being able to download again. I've got a screenfull of downloads. Watching them I find that some downloads -- while they're actively downloading and the percentage is going up -- time out and go to the bottom of the queue. Then another partially downloaded task begins and -- sometime while downloading -- times out.

This may be partially due to having my preferences set for Astropulse tasks only, which are 8 MB in size. I have now changed my preference to seti@home tasks only. I'm hoping the smaller file sizes will lead to more tasks completing on the first try.
The plan that was announced a while back for you guys to quadruple the task sizes has me worried. It seems far fewer tasks (probably at least 4 times fewer tasks) will download on the first try, and the overhead of increased restarts will more than offset any advantage that increased task size has on your database.

After all, if no one can get any work you don't even need a database.

Here it is Wednesday morning (Jan 23) and for the first time since the air conditioner outage 10 days ago I have no WUs trying to download.

It was a frustrating 10 days as so many of these posts have noted -- and I'll admit I didn't think I'd ever get back to a "normal" work cache and was pretty sure the usual Tuesday outage would back things up even more.

So, congratulations on whatever you guys did abd keep up the good work.

they are having a severe network load right now...

I'd appreciate it if someone in the know would explain the chart. It says it's a chart for a gigibit eithernet controller. That's 1,000 megabits, yet the graph shows it's being utilized at less than 100 megabits. So what's the problem?
