Sobering thought... the amount of work you crunched in 1999 can be done in
less than a day now. You spent 300x the amount of electricity than it costs now.

If we wait another ten years, we can do 300x more work for the same cost,
and not waste money on electricity now!

Just that the results (if any) would come in later rather than sooner...

true but by that time there might be 300 times more data coming in. so we would be behind again :) plus if we find ET maybe they have a warp reactor so power is no going to be a problem :P

Today, within the limitations of time, I hope to put the final wraps on the server and prep it for drop off at FedEx. The weight of the server is close to the limit that UPS has at 70lbs per package so I elected to ship with a better carrier.

It does cost more but in my opinion FedEx is a better option as they seem to take much better care of the packages under their watchful stare. UPS has damaged so much of my stuff that it gives me the chills just thinking about sending our fine server through their myriad of trucks and processing centers.

Todd

I've seen a comparison test for shipping done with accelerometers, etc, comparing UPS, Fedex, and the USPS. To make a long story short, insure the package for it's real value, and send it USPS if they will take it.

Page 60, Popular Mechanics, December 2010

It's not a vast experiment with scientifically reliable results, but it seems to indicate that the big three package carriers in the US are similar in how they process packages.

LOL...I was gonna post that clip of the box rolling over and over on the conveyor belt, but I can't seem to find it right now.

the antenna at Arecibo
doesn't do much ,in the way of moving etc
so stills are fine .
the scenery would be great ,the weather would play havoc with a webcam ,but the Server cam ,would let us all see ,in real time
what Activity was happening at the heart of seti.
of course multiple cams[Arecibo & Server rack] would be great
but the bandwidth would have to be small
so the Science projects are kept running .

How about a webcam sending a still image every 60 seconds to a external FTP.

I'll donate some FTP space on my dedicated if they want to set something like that up. :)

Good luck with the new servers. Hopfully they will play nice. If not send them my way have a big hammer for configuring servers :)

You sound like my mate does! Everytime he has a computer problem, he wants to take his hammer to it! :-)

I've always managed to sort it out without needing to batter it! It's hard convincing him that it'll last longer if it's not in millions of pieces!

Giz.

i fix computers for a living. the hammer is better
