I frequently send e-mails and/or post in various Internet forums, including my own personal blog, bragging about the numerous scientific research projects, including the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence, that my computer is being used for by the Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing, and urging them to also participate.

As an elderly disabled veteran of the war in the old Republic of Viet Nam, I already have encountered occasional reluctance from some of my fellow veterans, who, like myself, also have bad memories of the violent war protesters at the University of California at Berkeley.

And now, we have this!

This is very embarrassing for everybody connected with S.E.T.I. and B.O.I.N.C.

Anyway, in spite of it all, I'll continue my own participation in these invaluable scientific research projects, and try to encourage others to also do so.

Oh, and by the way, I also frequently use my e-mail and the assorted Internet forums to express my own personal unpopular and controversial opinions on a variety of subjects, but that is always separate from any of my communications regarding S.E.T.I. or B.O.I.N.C.

I solved the problem by using a different web browser.

When using the Internet Explorer web browser, the reCaptcha doesn't appear in the "Edit Profile" page at the SETI@Home web site.

But, the reCaptcha does appear when using the Mozilla Firefox web browser.

Strangely, I didn't encounter that problem when updating my profile at any of the other BOINC projects.

I'm unable to edit my SETI@Home profile because, after hitting the "Update" button, it says I'm giving an "incorrect ReCaptcha response".

However, the SETI@Home profile edit feature doesn't show a ReCaptcha.

I think the webmaster must have forgotten to include it.

At all of the other BOINC projects that I run, a ReCaptcha was visible, and I was able to update my profile.

I reckon your explanation(s) clears up the problem.

I'd noticed that when SETI@HOME work units were running, if I clicked on "GRAPHICS", that the B.O.I.N.C. program would indicate there were no graphics for the SETI@HOME work units.

Thank you for taking the time to explain this to me.

I don't know what's going on.

The B.O.I.N.C. program on my computer (if I'm reading it correctly) shows a whole bunch of work units completed for SETI@HOME.

I wonder where you're seeing that my computer has completed only one (01) work unit?

Do you reckon all the other work units were aborted?

Currently, there are no SETI@HOME work units running, but I expect to receive more work units at any moment.

Maybe the problem is this computer.

It's a new one that I purchased to replace my beloved Toshiba Satellite laptop that suddenly went, "KERBLOOEY ! ! !", after years of faithful service.

On that computer, I was always able to see the SETI@HOME screensaver.

How do I do that?

I didn't know that was an option.

I didn't know there was any difference between the Intel GPU and my computer's CPU, nor do I know that I had any control over either one.

Please explain to me, step by step, how to do this.

My computer is a Hewlett Packard Notebook with a Windows 10 operating system, connected to a Vizio 32" HD Television set, and using a Microsoft keyboard and mouse.

Thank you.

I realize that with the advent of flat screen monitors (I use my Vizio 32" HD television set for my computer monitor), screensavers are no longer necessary, but I just enjoy watching the SETI@HOME Screensaver, the EINSTEIN@HOME Screensaver, and the WORLD COMMUNITY GRID Screensaver(s).

Greetings:

What happened to the SETI@HOME Screensaver?

Why doesn't it appear on my computer screen anymore?

The only screensavers I'm seeing now are EINSTEIN@HOME Screensaver and the WORLD COMMUNITY GRID Screensaver.

Please bring back the SETI@HOME Screensaver.

Thank you.

Greetings and Salutations:

I just now read the most recent notice from SETI@home.

I have, or had, accounts on the FaceBook, Twitter, MySpace, and Linkedin web sites, but I've found all of those social networking web sites are boring, and so, I no longer use them.

Thank you.

I just now checked my B.O.I.N.C. program, and there is a new assignment downloaded from S.E.T.I., so everything is plumb hunky dory and back to normal.

Thank you.

Greetings:

For the past couple of days, there's been NO new work downloaded from S.E.T.I.

Three other B.O.I.N.C. projects continue to function as usual.

So, what's up with the S.E.T.I. project?

Why isn't there any work being assigned to my computer?

Is this normal?

Am I worrying over nothing?

Thank you.
33) Questions and Answers : Windows : Unable To Remove BOINC (Message 752040)

Post:
OK, now then to remove the other BOINC directory. Have you tried to do it from Windows Safe Mode?

*****************

Jord:

As you suggested, I tried doing that, but it was unsuccessful.

I removed most of the contents of the old BOINC folder, but the "C:Program Files/BOINC/slots/0" remained.

As a result of using Safe Mode, I encountered other problems.

The Windows Live Family Safety wouldn't let me on the Internet, so I uninstalled it completely, and after rebooting, I'm once more on the Internet.

Windows Defender kept aggravating me with requests for permission to run BOINC or the BOINC screensaver, so I finally figured out how to turn it off.

Somehow, those things messed up my BOINC program, so SETI wouldn't run right.

So, I did a repair, and now, it's back to normal.

I reckon I've done about all that can be done with this thing.

Thank you.

34) Questions and Answers : Windows : Unable To Remove BOINC (Message 751989)
Posted 12 May 2008 by Profile John Robert Mallernee
Post:
Vista doesn't like it when programs that write to disk are installed in the Program Files directory where the BOINC installer points to by default. This is fixed in the next version of BOINC, which separates the executables from the writable files in two different directories, but until that time, install 5.10.45 in c:\\boinc instead of c:\\program files\\boinc

To do so, make sure you click "Change path" on the third or fourth screen of the installer. This allows you to change the path in which BOINC is installed.

*******************

Jord:

Your advice WORKED!!!

SETI is running once again!

Thank you so VERY much!!!

The Windows Installer Cleanup Utility never did work.

After installation, it showed up as just a blank white sheet of paper, which wouldn't respond to my mouse.

The original BOINC program is still on my hard drive.

When I installed the new BOINC, I goofed and put it directly on the "C" drive, without creating a folder.

BOINC refused to connect to the Internet, and Windows kept closing the BOINC program.

So, I unistalled BOINC, then reinstalled it, and created a "BOINC" folder on my "C" drive.

Apparently, that solved the problem, for at this time, BOINC and SETI appear to be running normally.

Thank you.

Delete on boot might be the way to go.

************

Grant:

I successfully installed the "DELETE ON REBOOT" as an option in my right hand menus.

However, it failed to remove the folder, "C:Program Files/BOINC/slots/0", nor would it remove the entire BOINC folder.

Thus, I'm still unable to do any work for SETI, because there's no way for me to repair or install a properly functioning BOINC program.

I did uninstall BOINC, but it's still on my hard disk, with no way to get rid of it.

Thank you.

At least with windows XP that works. There's also a way to check the volume by using its properties in windows explorer, but since I have a German XP version, I can't give you step-by-step instructions for your vista.

*************

Gundolf:

I did what you described, but the computer refused to cooperate.

It said I didn't have sufficient privileges.

That's what infuriates me about Windows Vista, for it's constantly denying access to all sorts of things.

This is MY computer!

What do they mean by telling ME that I don't have permission to do something on my own computer?

I wish I'd never upgraded from Windows XP to Windows Vista.

So, I reckon maybe I'll try the delete on reboot approach, and see if that works.

Thank you.

Post:
Greetings:

For the past several weeks, I've been unable to download any new work from SETI, nor could I complete any work for any other BOINC project.

The file or directory, "
C:Program Files\\BOINC\\slots\\0" is not accessible because it is corrupted and unreadable.

The folder cannot be opened or removed.

When trying to delete the file, I get this error message:

"
Error 0x80070091: The directory is not empty."

"
0"

"
Date created: 30-Dec-06 16:46"

It is necessary to remove this folder in order to completely remove BOINC from my system, before installing it again.

I have tried repeatedly, without success, to either repair or uninstall, and then reinstall BOINC.

If that corrupted file could be removed from my computer, I'm certain that would resolve the problem.

I've been running the SETI program on three (03) different computers since 07 February 2001, with no difficulty until now.

I've run SETI on this computer since 04 July 2006.

My personal desktop computer is a Hewlett-Packard Pavilion m7463w, originally equipped with Windows XP Media Center Edition, but upgraded to Windows Vista Home Premium.

My high speed Internet connection is through Comcast Cable Television.

I use the free AVG anti-virus and anti-spam programs from Grisoft.

Thank you.
