Currency is basically worth whatever people agree it is worth. Nothing more, nothing less. The definition of "worth" and "people" are open to discussion, of course.

+1

Basically it's: "currency = trust".

Without trust, there's no currency.

When trust is gone, this happens (beer becomes pretty expensive *g*):

But what happened to the Zimbabwean dollar can also happen to Bitcoins. Or to the Euro. Or to the US dollar.

My personal bet is: Bitcoins will still be worth something - long after the US dollar has gone down the drain ...

And so is any currency. Even the Euro, and even more the USD.

6 of the 11 AP units that just got validated have this
In ap_remove_radar.cpp: get_indices_to_randomize: num_ffts_forecast < 100. Blanking too much RFI?
  percent blanked: 100.00

So 8 MB of downloaded data for 3 seconds of computation!

Please! Can we finally get rid of this **** blanking? It's an ongoing issue for years now.

OK. Thanks for your replies.

I just updated my client & already got my first AP 6 WU. Problem: "Timed out - no response".

Hi I haven't been crunching for some tome. When I look at the Server Status page I see only 0's for Astropulse.

Can someone please give me an update what's going on with Astropulse?

An AMD E350 is a silly processor to use on Boinc

Seems like my 10 years old AthlonXP 2000+ with the optimized app is about 1.5x faster. OK, that's per core, but anyway...

But the E350 includes an OpenCL capable GPU which could change that picture.
                                                                   Joe

It crunches (OpenCL) Astropulse units twice as fast as my Intel ION did (at the same low power consumption).

It is not hard to choose then. If I wanted 3 PCIe x16, I would take AsRock Z68 Extreme4 Gen3.

I switched to ASRock a few years ago and never had any problems with them (had 5 boards in total so far). Plus their customer support is awesome: You can email them and they really spend some time & try to find a solution / answer for your questions. Haven't had that level of support from any hardware vendor since the ... hmmm ... late 80's ? ;)

"a while" as in years?

For the "old" apps the credit system still seems to be a random number generator ...

How much PR do you expect from four part time staff?

Enough to convince me to keep on crunching.

I am surprised that there are not more people here asking (themselves?) the same question.

imho S@H is too much of a black box.

I'm also curious, of course, but until the re-observations are complete and any findings peer reviewed I don't expect any public statements.

It always surprises me how much time, money & electricity the participants here are willing to spend on S@H - for so little, let's call it, "public relations".

I was just reading: "As of November 2011, the Einstein@Home project has discovered a total of 14 pulsars. Ten from Parkes Multibeam Survey data and four from Arecibo radio data."

What about Astropulse? It basically does the same pulsar search.

Why are "we" not detecting anything?

I little bit more information from the Seti team would be nice.

Maybe, until the fabled 1Gbps link to the lab is installed, the short term answer is to restrict AP to CPU only crunching.

That would be unwise - since crunching APs on GPU is way more (energy-)efficient. If it was up to me I would restrict AP crunching to GPU only :)

Joe had a good idea some time ago: A combined app, that transfers the Arecibo data only ONCE - and does BOTH, a MB and a AP search. Since the raw data for MB and AP is basically the same this should be possible.

But what we really need for the future is a more in depth search - where a WU takes 10 days instead of 1. AFAIK the Seti guys are already working on that ...

If "earning" points is what you are after then maybe you should start Bitcoin mining. Because with 1.000.000 BOINC points you can by less than with 1 Zimbabwe dollar ;)

In the end it all comes down to personal choice: If you want to help proving that which can not be proven by sheer compute power (Collatz conjecture) then yes, Collatz is the right project for you ;)

Anyway, GPUz shows three different GPU temps., so I am wondering if it is capable of running 3 different WUs concurrently.

No, that has nothing to do with that. To figure out the optimum number of WUs to run in parallel is trial & error.

I'm new to gpu computing, and I am learning that different projects seem to handle this differently. Lunatics/seti seems to handle multiple WUs but also occupies CPU time, Collatz only runs one, but leaves CPUs free to crunch independantly.

Thats partly because all newer AMD Catalyst drivers suck (and use 100% CPU, when it should be <5%). Partly because Lunatics apps can not run entirely on the GPU (yet). For example for Astropulse the blanking stuff needs to be done on the CPU (for now).

As for your original question: It's best to figure out your RAC by yourself. To do so, download the Test Tools from Lunatics download section (knabench/apbench). Then use those tools to do an offline run of a MB and/or AP unit.

For example, if you can finish one AP unit in 2 hours, you can finish 12 per day. On average you get ~750 points for each AP unit. 12 * 750 -> 9000 RAC

I'd be curious what your results will be. Could you please post them here?

I'd be interested if there is some progress on the AP search.

Einstein@home (re-)detects one pulsar after the other - and we? Are there any presentable results yet?

A more transparent and open information policy would be desirable. Methinks.

I now see a steady increase of "Results returned and awaiting validation" on the Status page.

Did the Seti Gods fix the ap_validate3 problem simply by hard coding the status to "Running" / green? ;)
