1) Questions and Answers : Windows : What a ridiculously difficult program to operate (Message 277447)

Just came across this posting. I installed BOINC a couple of weeks ago knowing not a thing about it - just seemed like a good idea at the time! The damn thing almost installed and configured itself...I was grateful I was required to do a couple of things myself otherwise I would have been totally redundant. I'm puzzled with someone having problems installing and using the software. I found it embarassingly easy.

Good answers, thanks. I really don't know enough about this stuff to have a moan but it's amusing to see the amount of complaints that are driven by the competitive spirit - not a bad thing but how many of us attach to a project because it's something we believe in rather than looking for the quick turn-round to rack up the points?
p.s. Is the advice - 'Hands off that Update button'?

Maybe SETI@HOME should just switch off for a while. Some people are trying to help, some are trying to gain credits but it's obvious that the system can't cope. 'Communication deferred?' How common is that? Is SETI@HOME suffering from too much popularity?

My understanding is that error 403 is an access denied or restricted.

A per the Boinc Wiki

The server understood the request, but is refusing to fulfill it. Authorization will not help and the request SHOULD NOT be repeated. If the request method was not HEAD and the server wishes to make public why the request has not been fulfilled, it SHOULD describe the reason for the refusal in the entity. If the server does not wish to make this information available to the client, the status code 404 (Not Found) can be used instead.
Typically due to file access permissions on the server.

In the case of the BOINC System, the Web Server thinks that the HTTP data stream sent by the client (e.g. a Web Browser or the BOINC Daemon) was correct, but access to the resource identified by the URL is forbidden for some reason.

This indicates a fundamental access problem, which may be difficult to resolve because the HTTP protocol allows the Web Server to give this response without providing any reason at all. So the 403 error is equivalent to a blanket 'NO' by the Server - with no further discussion allowed.

By far the most common reason for this error is that directory browsing is forbidden for the Web Site. In the case of a response to a Scheduler Request Message or an Upload/Download action is because of an error on the server-side of BOINC System.

Wha??? What language are you talking in? We're just trying to help with crunching the numbers but keep getting 'Communication Deferred...'Should we all just quit? Can you explain it in layman's terms?

We need to continue cleaning up after several server issues over the weekend. We won't be sending out any new work until we clear up some disk space.

OK. Thanks guys.

I know this one's been asked many times but I haven't seen an answer to it yet - other than 'just leave it, it'll sort itself out. The SETI app on my maching has been stuck on 'Communication deferred'. These are the most recent messages. The last entry says 'scheduler request succeeded' but it's still stuck on 'Communication deferred'. What am I missing?

Thanks for your comments people but you see I don't have a problem as such. It's the risk factor I'm thinking about - it might or might not give me problems and it has obviously given a lot of people problems. Not just the postings on these forums but other sources like http://www.download.com/SETI-home/3640-2400_4-10488045.html

Sorry guys. I read through all I thought I needed to and created an account then downloaded BOINC but haven't yet installed. Thought I'd browse the Questions and Problems and...woops!...there's a lot of problems. Can't see the point of installing if I'm going to have all that hassle. I thought it would be 'set and forget'. I'd like to help but I don't think it's a viable proposition.
