I have been running setiathome for my god like 9 - 10 years now. And in all those year with out fail on a long week end I get "NO RUNNING TASKS" or "UNABLE TO DOWNLOAD TASK" or some other thing is wrong!! So for 3 or more days the systems I build just to run Setiathome are sucking electricity and sping the good old hard drive doing nothing, "I DON'T GET IT" is the equipment at Berkeley so unreadable it brakes down with no one there for longer then two days?? I thought the reason for spending a godzillin dollars on Sun equipment was because it is readable and dose not need some one watching it 24/7/265!! Am I wrong in that thought??

P.S. No Running Tasks Again ;-(

It must be friday I see not one of our systems is doing any Seti work!! You can count on, when theirs a long week end, the Seti server well be down! Bet the farm and the house on that it's a sure thing! And I'm not a betting man but I would bet that!! The funny thing is I have a web server built in 1997, a dual Pentium Pro 200MHz system with 2 9Gig SCSI H/Ds' running FreeBSD 2.something that has never been off and never shut down and wroking for 3,000+ days with not one break down, but them $100,000 SUN systems with 40 Hard Drives and 10Gig of RAM you guys run, every other week end it's down?? whats up with that?? Oh well I told I would bitch if I came in and found our systems on and doing nothing so theirs my bitch.

Rev. Tim Olivera

As noted yesterday in my tech news item we had some database plans this morning. First a brief SETI@home project outage to clean up some logs. That was quick and harmless. We then kept the assimilators offline so we could add signal table indexes on the science database. Jeff's continuing work on developing/optimizing the signal candidate "nitpicker" - short for "near time persistency checker" i.e. the thing that continually looks for persistent, and therefore interesting, signals in our reduced data. The new indexes will be a great help.

Of course, there were other things afoot to make the above a little more complicated. The science replica database server hung up again this morning. We found this was due to the automounter losing some important directories. Why the hell does this happen? The mounts time out naturally, but the automounter fails to remount them next time they are needed. Seems like a major linux bug to me, as it's happening on all our systems to some extent. I adjusted the automounter timeouts from 5 minutes to 30 days. Doing so already helped on one other test system.

Meanwhile, back on the farm... we're sending out some junky data that overflows quickly so that's been swamping our servers with twice the usual load. Annoying, but we'll just let nature take its course and get through the bad spots. This has the positive by product of giving us a heavy-load test to see how our servers currently perform under increased strain... except with the simultaneous aforementioned index build the extra splitter activity was gumming everything up. We have the splitters offline as I write this. Hopefully we'll be able to get them back online before we run out of work. If not, then so be it.

So in the last 6 days we got maybe 10hr worth of work.. And if it sounds like i'm bitching I AM.. When folks volunteer you shouldn't have them standing around with there thumbs up there butt. An yes after 24 years in the US Army I get just a little pissed off when I see 12hr work down in 6 days... So I will continue to bitch and complain as long as a dual 3.6GIG machine is doing nothing but sucking up power.

"In case you don't know the replacement server will arrive on Friday."
You have been saying that for over a week now, With Sun just down the road from you, you could have walked down there picked it up and walked back by now!! I have shut down my systems because of your "it's going to be another day" bull! If it's so important that your asking the public to help you with this program, then why in the hell did you not have a backup system incase this very thing happened?? This is not the first time you lost a server and the folks doing this work have had to set on there ass while you ran around looking for a system to take up the slack!! And the fact that any computer could run your data base and server XX amount of time files to the public means you could have had a cheap home system as a backup to server a time file so folks doing the work would not be waiting for over a week on YOU! all it really needs to do is run the data base that folks log into and get XX amount of work, heck a Max or and old Pentium 200MHz Pro could do that!! It does not have to be a $20,000 SUN system... D'oh O'pps Yup some of us are computer literate and some of us even design and build them for a living! D'oh... Your notebook could do the job, so get a computer on line and get the damn job running..

Yeah I said that.

Well I asked a simple question looking for a YES or NO and a model number if the answer was YES. And look at the answers I got!! The question had nothing to do with birthdays or antennas or HAM radio catalogs. But for the folks that wanted to know the answer, it's YES and the scanners range is from 1KHz to 3GHz not 30GHz like I was told. It's no longer made and the only scanner reciever made today that comes close to it is the AOR AR5000 http://www.aorusa.com/ar5000a.html#5000ac So thanks for all the none answers that had nothing to do with the question!!!
