BOINC as service on Leopard?
(Message 671575)
Posted 3 Nov 2007 by subsailor Post: Has anyone tried to run BOINC as a service on Leopard? I tried the same script to do this as I had working in Tiger, but though it adds the BOINC executable to /Library/Startup Items, it never runs. I would greatly prefer to run this as a background service and just use the manager to set prefs and whatnot...or (if anyone in the development team is reading) have an option to not have the Dock/Menu Bar icons (I don't use the screensaver). Any assistance would be appreciated. |

Mac install not following preferences

Posted 26 Oct 2007 by subsailor Post: But, even if that is not so, why not, as a compromise, set Activity/Run Based On Preferences and set (for this computer only) at Advanced/Preferences.../Processor Usage to fixed times when you want it to run SETI in your normal "resting hours". This can be done for every day the same, or for each day of the week individually. Then, on the odd occasion that you do "overtime", you can set Activity/Suspend and revert to Activity/Run Based On Preferences when you finish. As I said, it's a compromise, but if all else has failed..... Keith, the latest version I see for Mac OS X is 5.10.20. If there is a newer version, it must be for Windows, but I've got a Mac. I just went to the download page and .20 was the newest it shows, aside from development versions. |

If I run the client it works fine, but installing as a service on Mac OS X only seems to allow the option to run constantly or never run...no in-between. What am I missing here? |

And I'm wondering if this will work, since it seems to ignore the preferences. |

Mac install not following preferences

Posted 24 Oct 2007 by subsailor Post: I have the latest version of BOINC installed on a Macbook (Intel Core Duo), and set it to run as a service. In the preferences, I set it to run after the computer has been idle for 5 minutes...but unless I manually start it, BOINC never starts (regardless of how long the Macbook is idle). That's not doing it, either. I can tell from RAC/results sent in by the Mac...if I don't manually set it's activity to "Run Always" it never picks up (even when I'm at work, and the computer is completely idle). Unless I set it to "Run Always", BOINC never seems to realize the computer is "idle" and start processing. BOINC is running as a service (and I can see in Activity Monitor that it's indeed running), it just never does anything. |

Posted 22 Oct 2007 by subsailor Post: OS X has such clean tasking that I am unable to tell if Bionc is up or down by the way my system functions. Once I thought Bionc was the source of a slow down, but it turned out to be a fragmented disk. Set it to always run and if you haven’t, look at this thread some time. http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=39135 I can tell it's not running, however, since up until I set it to run at all times it turned in no results. Now it is actually finishing work and sending in results. |

Yes, it's set to "Never" in the power management settings. I didn't want to have it running "Always", as I only want to run BOINC when I'm not using the computer. Which is why I set it to run as a service and to run after the computer has been idle for 5 minutes. |

How to change the Standard Browser in BOINC ?
(Message 161275)
Posted 1 Sep 2005 by subsailor Post: I also had this problem a while ago with Mozilla with BOINC 4.25 under XP. The only thing that helped was installing Firefox. I tried everything else short of reinstalling Windows :( I'm having the same issue. Reinstalled Firefox and the BOINC client, and made sure every way I knew how that Firefox is the default browser...and the BOINC link buttons still open IE (two windows, to boot). I'm stumped. And I can't stand IE. Any fresh ideas? |

But I'll upgrade (or downgrade, in this case) at any rate. Any ideas on when/if the screensaver will support locking the workstation for Win2K/XP? |

Posted 23 Nov 2004 by subsailor Post: v4.13 is the latest available for download, but updating the BOINC software via ClimatePrediction.net I got v4.51 (http://home.hawaii.rr.com/schumachersforum/images/boinc%20version.jpg for the screenshot, I'm not kidding). What gives? |
