1) Questions and Answers : Windows : Laptop Heating Up (Message 228808)

I recently read some comments in another forum that uses 100% of the CPU capacity and causes overheating. After reading this I noticed that the cooling fan is always running when BOINC is on and and hardly ever runs when BOINC is off. I run BOINC on my laptop and am worried about damaging it.

I've been a SETI@home member for over 4 years and never had this problem with the old SETI Classic. I hate the idea of leaving SETI but can't afford to risk my laptop. Can someone please give me some inputs on what my options are?

Thanks

Hey I need help!

Just got my weekly newsletter from Download.com and SETI@Home was on the featured download list. Out of curiosity I checked out the the download details (it sounded like SETI Classic????). Anyway, I checked out the user reviews and found that every user was complaining that running SETI cuased the CPU temperature to rise and thus endangered the life of the PC. Can anyone tell me if this is true?

Thanks.

It runs the cpu at maximum, 100%, causing it to run hotter that most computers. But it should not be a problem with a reasonably well maintained computers. There can be problems with laptops as the cooling on these is minimal in most cases. But good ones have speed reduction capabilities if they get too warm.

Anybody destroying a cpu because of continual 100% usage of the cpu should question the maker why.

My P3 has been running Seti and then BOINC since I built it at about the time I signed on.

Thanks Andy. I work on a laptop and after getting your reply I've been checking the running with BOINC on and off. When BOINC is on the fan is always running and when its off, the fan never runs. I guess the heat load is a lot for a laptop. Strange, but I never had this problem with SETI Classic. I agree that there's no reason why the cpu should not run at 100%, but I can't take the risk. All my work is on my laptop and I can't afford to risk it. Additionally, I can't afford to buy another one if this should pack up.

So, with a heavy heart, I guess I'll have to leave SETI and BOINC. It's been a great 5 years.

So long, everyone.

I completely agree. Yes there are glitches in BOINC, but so what? Is there anyone else trying to do what these guys at Berkeley are doing and have been doing for all these years? I've worked on similar - though much much smaller projects - funded by donations and I know how hard it is to work when (a) you have the minimum financial resources today and (b) you don't know how much you'll have tomorrow. I get the feeling that most people don't appreciate the importance of what is being done. Sure there's a million to one chance of finding life out there. But what were the chances of humans evolving out of the first single cell creatures?

Hats off to the guys at SETI. I just wish I could do more!!

I've been a long time SETI member but closed down my account and switched to BOINC about a month ago because I couldn't figure out how to tranfer my credits etc. BOINC is more complicated but if what Matt says is correct, I guess there was no option but to make this switch. My only grouse is - why can't things be made simpler for non-geeks like me? I'm a member of Rosetta also and I know my computer is doing stuff for both SETI and Rosetta, but I have no idea of what is going on, how credits are computed etc. I guess I'll just have to muddle along. But I won't give up. I don't believe in UFOs, crop circles, alien abductions etc. but I do know that one day we will establish contact. Surely the human race is not the only rational (??????) race in creation!

To recover password of seti classic

  1. If you have access to your Classic Seti files then open 'user_info.sah' in notepad, or similar, and copy the contents into the form below, in step 3, to recover your password.

  2. If not, and you can remember your Classic Seti email address, even if it is not your current address, then install Seti Classic again.
  3. Use you old email address to get relevant information.
  4. Stop Seti Classic and follow instructions in step 1.
  5. Paste the contents of user_info.sah into box from your Classic SETI folder on this page to extract your Classic password.
  6. With that information, your BOINC account key and your current email address, you can go to this page and link the Classic to the BOINC.
Use the top section for your Classic seti email address and the third section on this form for the BOINC information and the classic password.

If you need the classic program a link for version 3.08 is here (direct download link),
