YAY, woohoo, get in there my son, as of 14:32 on 22 March 2008, my Mac pro finally made 10,000 RAC.

May seem small to most, but feels worryingly good. I think I need to get out a little more.

Congrats man. This here Darwin box of mine isn't that far behind you. I topped 9500 RAC today and have been climbing steadily since last week when I worked out the bottleneck on my computer that was keeping me in the 7500-8000 range.

Dawin's rule!

Lunar beauty pulls students into the night

Earth’s shadow in the sky eclipses school vacation

WORCESTER— Girls in pajamas and boys in hoods, 150 or so adolescents and a few frozen adults mingled ’neath the ever-elusive moon last night, singing its praises in eighth-grade superlatives — “awesome,” “very cool,” “gorgeous” — and when the eclipse went total, they all stared up as if moonstruck.

The lunar eclipse, triangulated with an especially bright Saturn and the star Regulus, loomed big and eerily beautiful over the Worcester East Middle School parking lot on Grafton Street as it passed through the Earth’s shadow. As impressive as the orb’s trip, the earthly phenomena of scores of students trekking to school on a frigid night in the middle of a vacation week might even have been more so.

“I love it,” said the man who inspired them to show up, Grade 8 science teacher Howard Fain, as he moved among his students, guiding them to telescopes or hot chocolate, answering questions, prompting answers.

A former union negotiator who decided five years ago that he was really a teacher, Mr. Fain gave the moon and its shroud credit for motivating the students to come out.

“This is perfect,” he said. “We’ve been studying the tides and the phases. There’s something magical about an eclipse. There’s something magical about the moon.”

As the moon slipped blushing ever further behind its veil and the crowd enlarged, the smiles on the face of Mr. Fain and East Middle Principal Rose Dawkins grew wider.

“This is an extension of his class,” said a well-bundled Ms. Dawkins. “He’s a fantastic teacher and I’m here to support him.”

Pajama-ed eighth-graders Rebecca Blackwell, Maria O’Leary, Nicole Heaney and Dayannara Munoz interrupted a slumber party game of “Vampire” to make their way to the school parking lot to witness their first total lunar eclipse.

“I love the way you can see it changing every moment,” Ms. Munoz said.

Ms. Dawkins checked her watch: “9:59. Two minutes to totality.”

“You can see the curve of the Earth inside the shadow,” marveled Ms. Blackwell.

“It’s the most exciting day of my life,” said Ms. O’Leary.

“Gorgeous,” gushed Ms. Heaney.

In the school’s foyer, Jim J. Zebrowski, president of the Aldrich Astronomical Society, purveyors of backyard astronomy, gave forth on meteorites for a shifting group of students who came inside to use the bathrooms or to de-numb frozen hands and found themselves drawn to his fiery account of things falling from the sky.

To say that Mr. Zebrowski is enthusiastic about the night sky is to say that Willie Mays was OK with playing baseball. On an especially busy celestial day that included the eclipse, the landing of the space shuttle, the Navy shooting a satellite to smithereens 150 miles up, and a large meteorite landing in Washington state, Mr. Zebrowski’s zeal for the firmament provided more heat than the hot chocolate.

“This was hundreds of feet across when it began falling to Earth,” he said as he held out a meteorite the size of a fist. “It’s nickel and iron. There’s nickel and iron at the Earth’s core. It came from the asteroid belt between Neptune and Jupiter, hundreds of millions of miles away.”

The Aldrich Society set up two reflector telescopes and a refractor telescope in the parking lot, along with a pair of tripod-mounted binoculars to aid viewing. Students and adults lined up for a view of Saturn’s rings through a telescope manned by society member Bob Peloquin.

“You can get one like this for about $400,” Mr. Peloquin said.

The society is hosting a night sky viewing and talk from 6 to 10 p.m. March 14 at Anna Maria College’s science building. For further information, visit www.aldrichastro.org

The society has come a long way. We received Astronomy Magazine's Public Outreach award for 2007. It is given once a year to one organization across the globe. Needless to say we took some pride from that award.

On paper in Federal/State databases I am the Public Outreach Coordinator, but in reality it is the club President Jim Zebrowski who is the heart and soul of the program. I just do the website and help out at some events.

Eric, with that Mac Pro, unless you get paired with one of the other high RAC machines, you will probably end up with a total pending credit approximately 3 x your normal RAC. Mine is at about 25,000 at the minute, so you'll see it increase a little more as you continue to climb up the rankings.

Since my first post on this thread my computer crunched about another 250 work units. Very few went into pending. I just woke up and my RAC had dropped back down to about 6400 and after a project update it was back up to almost 6700.

So in the past 24 hours my computer crunched about 500 work units & half went into pending and half were credited. I remember the computer I had up until late last year was able to complete only 2 work units a day. ...... from 2 to 500 is a bit of a jump ya think?

So I kind of ignored the computer for the past 24 hours and found my RAC which had climbed to about 7000 had dropped down to 6300. Turns out I ended up with tons of 1st time crunched work units and my pending credit went from 6000 up to over 14000 in that time. In the past 10 hours my computer crunched about 225 work units which some of brought my RAC back up to 6600, however much of it went into pending. Wish the numbers in my bank account statement went up that fast.

I am downloading wu's and they finish downloading but never appear among the tasks. BOINC will not start to work on any task.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Nick

The only time I have noticed that happen is after detaching and reattaching the project. The tasks wont start crunching until the project files (not the WUs) have downloaded. I found that they were delayed download in the transfers tab. I forced them to download and once they did the tasks began to crunch.

I have over 8000 pending some from Jan.5 if it isn't done in 6 weeks most likely it never will be,should be reasigned after 2 weeks.I have reset pref.to not accept any new wu untill all pending is cleared.

It happens. About a week ago I had 18,000 in pending credit. It is down to about 9,000 now. I know we would like to have all of our credit immediately but until the NTPCKR is up an running which will pretty much validate WUs in real time, things need to be done verified comparatively to ensure validity of the completed work.

My settings are basically no different than using Crunch3r's optimized BOINC client (which reports 1 minute after upload), but I am waiting to report every 6 hours.

How does one alter these settings?

On your SETI Account page...Computing Preferences...Network usage...Computer is connected about every_____days and Maintain enough work for____days.

You're too fast for me John. :)

I always just had that set to zero. Still only contacted the server a few times a day.

Can someone please tell me how "anonymous" the #1 person on the top computers lists has the same exact computer as I do and seems to run the same v8 version of an optimized client and it takes him 1000 seconds or less for each work unit and it takes my computer on average 2700 seconds. That is a massive difference for the same setup.

Hi Eric,
Looking at history of your computer and #1 person computer, I see that you are crunching comparable WU's faster that #1.

#1 history

your history

Just keep your system up and running steady and your RAC will continue to grow as pending WU's come to fruition.

Good luck,

Thanks for your help guys. :)

So many variables. With him being anonymous you can't really check much. It could be he is getting good wingmen that are turning in on time so his pending is a lot lower than yours. He could be getting a string of short but higher paying per work time WUs. The amount of time you take on an identical WU doesn't matter, it is the amount of work you do that counts. If the credits dep[ended on time I might as well pack it up and go home. :) It could even be the brand of RAM he is running as compared to yours. And you mentioned you do do some graphics occasionally that could slow you down just enough to make a difference if he is not doing anything but crunching.

I just checked my stats on several of the linked stat sites. Since I got my new computer I have been averaging 10,000 credits a day and my RAC is climbing (rising about 500 each day.) I am not worried about my credits at all and was just curious about crunch times thinking either I was doing something wrong or that there was something wrong with my new computer. I tweaked my system. It has to be something with the WUs.

This may sound stupid, but try taking out the 2 x 512MB stick, that way your Mac will be working in Quad Channel mode.

Although looking at the results, my Harpertown is completing work units in the same time as the number, so you should be getting crunch times the same as me.

What does Activity monitor say about CPU usage?

It might be worth your while PM'ing Gecko R7 or someone, they have been crunching a lot longer than I have and may be able to help you a bit better than I can.

I removed the 512MB sticks but it doesn't seem to have any affect. I have turned off any 3rd party software that could be impacting CPU usage. I reinstalled S@H and the V8. Same thing. It is weird to say the least. I was going through a couple of the other users WUs and they are getting the same results as me. Some get it done in less than 1000 seconds while some are taking up to 3000 seconds. But the RACs are compatible as the WU credit is seemingly compensating for the longer crunch times. I noticed some of your crunch times are well over 4000 seconds while others are less than 1000. I can only guess that for some reason our accounts are getting very different work units or something???

Eric, how is the memory in your Mac set up? do you have 4 x 2GB sticks and 2 x 512MB sticks? It seems the 1st machine has 4 x 1GB sticks.

If so this may be the reason , the Mac's work best when they are only using dual channel or quad channel mode - especially in the case of your older 8 core and they new ones. Also, what else are you using the Mac for? That could also be a large part of the reason. If your machine is the main machine you have and you use it for everything then that may be reducing performance, the guy in 1st may be running Seti only on that machine. It could also just be down to the Angle Range of the units your crunching.

Your RAC is still pretty impressive though. The more Mac's the merrier!

Yes I am using the configuration you stated for RAM. I dont do anything CPU intensive on the computer. Checking email several times a day and minimal web surfing. I do graphics heavy work maybe once a week.
