Good news guys! Thanks for some guys at climate it seems there is a method that worked.

To the new ones:
My problem was the following:

- At first: a "broken" client. You know I made stupid things, so after a while it is did not requested new WU's for seti anymore.
- Second: A hardware change
- Third: Boinc version change

The guys like "Greybeard" proposed a good method that usually works, but in my case it has a terrible effect and boinc crushed immediately after activation :((

Because I've only left two climate WU's to complete and had no other unfinished at other projects i asked some help from climate guys also.

They proposed a completely new installation of boinc and to copy the working directories to the new installation and editing a major file before copy.

It is risky, but worth a try. I am succeeded. I tell you how.

What I did? (step by step guide)

-1. I went offline and removed boinc
0. I installed it again. I do not let boinc to run itself.
1. Copied the "projects" folder into the new installation from my backup
2. Removed subfolder "setiathome.berkeley.edu" (climate dir was untouched)
3. I opened the backup folder and backed up again client_state.xml (to be sure if I make a mistake under editing)
4. I opened the xml and removed all sections related to setiathome from it. (be cautious!)
5. Than I Copied these files from backup to the new boinc folder:
- account_climateprediction.net.xml
- client_state.xml
- global_prefs.xml
- master_climateprediction.xml
- sched_reply_climateprediction.net.xml
- sched_request_climateprediction.net.xml
- statistics_climateprediction.net.xml

... than I opened boinc and it is started normally, no error message.
---> It is recognised my climate projects and their status
---> It is recognised the hardware change
---> It is recognised the boinc version change
---> Boinc started a benchmark

When boinc finished the benchmark, I put it in "always running" mode.
It is started calculating normally without error messages.

I became more brave so I went on-line and pushed the "update" button.
Boinc worked fine.

Now everything seems OK.

To be sure:
(You know Its just because my old client was "broken". )

- I pushed the button "no new work"
- i will make a frequent backup
- I will not join to other projects to keep it safe
- I will wait till I will finish my climate WU's
- I will be very sad, cause under this period I will lose my good position in my SETI team :((
- Then I will uninstall boinc and reinstall it and start again my boinc life with a "clean paper"

Good Bye Folks!

In your place I'd do the following:

- deinstall the newly installed version again
- copy all files/subdirectories from the backup into BOINC directory
- install the new version OVER the old one

Installing over the old version will replace the needed files and I'm quite confident that it'll work fine.

:-)= Greybeard

Now I am arrived home. I tried your proposal.
I installed the new version over the old one. I went online.
After the benchmark Boinc crashed almost immediately.
It was very quick.
I saw many red lines under the messages tab. Tons of unrecoverable errors :))

Finally Boinc cleared all the projects and it was EMPTY, but still seems running because the processor load was 100%.

I shut it down. No answer. I deinstalled it.

...maybe time solves my problem and my BOINC clear up its mind and start work properly. :))

If not.... My problem will remain and I will not getting new WU's. So I will lost my nice position in my SETI team...

Oooops - that's a new bit of information: Your newly installed BOINC does not download WUs? - Yes I verify that viewing your computers...

Hmmm - that's an other prob, of course.

What does it say in 'messages' tab?

:-)= Greybeard

No, no, no, no
I've had this problem with the older one. I made too many config changes, modifications, etc, so after a while my boinc stopped downloading seti wu's.
That was the original problem.

So, If we reinstalling the new BOINC above the old version, maybe my problem will remain.

But now its high time to try our theory.

Well - er - yes, they were right. But then you will have to begin with new WUs and forget the old ones... Copying back WUs from the discarded version to the new one won't work, IMHO.
As this seemed your main concern, I suggested the above.

:-)= Greybeard

Yeah..... Lets think over it!

Your original proposal worth a try. The other wise guys also said that, maybe time solves my problem and my BOINC clear up its mind and start work properly. :))

If not.... My problem will remain and I will not getting new WU's. So I will lost my nice position in my SETI team, but I will have a chance to finish my Climate WU that is already 70% ready.

When it is finished, I will not start the second one that is already in my queue. This will be lost and somebody else will comlete it.
Than I will erase the BOINC folder and reinstall it and start my work with new WU's.

Of course I will try to avoid stupid moves like micromanaging the BOINC client. :))

Is my idea is correct?
Hmmm, the only question is ... When I am finishing a Climate project, it is not needed to be stored on my computer anymore, right?

Thank you. I will try.
Though....truly I am a little bit afraid of doing this because I made some mistakes in the past (changed prefs too many times, and I did micromanagement too wth turning on and off the projects).... so because of these previous settings caused that my Boinc went crazy.

So, i was told by some experts that it is better if i remove it and reinstall the new version.

HI guys,

In the past I've got a computer with a BOINC client version 4.43. I've had some problems with BOINC, so I was told to reinstall it.
I did not, because at the same time I decided to make a major upgrade on my computer. I left it running as it was, till I got the new HW.

Now my new config is up and running and I reinstalled all the softwares. Now I've got a practically new computer with a new BOINC version of 5.6.2.

Before this change I saved my running SETI and CLIMATE projects and now I want to continue them.

I've got a backup copy of the BOINC folder, so theoretically only I have to do to copy all the folder content to the new location....

BUT
- I never made such thing before
- My old client was "broken", so I do not want to copy those *.xml config files that could hurt my new installation
- Now I've got a different version looks like using little bit different files, etc.
- I've got a new hardware, so I don't want to hurt my client with the old config files related to my ex-hardware config.

SO, WHICH files I have to copy, and which not if I want to continue my projects?

regards,

Well, you're welcome, but this information was missing, that's all :)
Just follow Keck's advices ..

Would you tell me whats the best way of upgrading BOINC?

- May I try simply install the new version above the old one?
- or first I have to remove the old one and install the new, than copy back all the work files?

One thing is sure: I will make a backup copy of the BOINC folder...

Leave it alone. All the suspending, no new work, and junk is most likely why it is not working the way you expect it to. Set your preferences the way you want them maybe do one update to get these preferences from the web site and leave it alone.

Other general advice:
Upgrade BOINC to the 5.2.x version that is currently recommended. There have been many improvements since the version you are running, in fact if I remember correctly that version had a bad bug in it that caused it to be pulled within a few days of release.

CPDN has a fairly long period between checkpoints so I would advise either leaving applications in memory or doing work while the computer is in use. That way you will loose less progress when you use the computer.

Set your queue to the size you really want and leave it alone. This is especially true in the 5.2.x versions, after a few completed workunits the client will really get that much work. I recommend the time you expect a local outage to last divided by the number of projects your are attached to as a maximum queue size. For example if you expect your connection to be down 4 days and you are attached to 2 projects then you should set your queue to no more than 2 days, I personally use 0.3 for my queue. A 10 day queue will likely cause EDF mode for seti and then no seti work will be downloaded until the other project(s) catch up.

To sum things up micromanaging BOINC normally makes whatever you are trying to acomplish harder, decide what settings you want and let BOINC adjust to them.

Thanks guys! I really appreciate.

- I will try not to pushing buttons if its not necessary :))
- I will try to forget the "micromanagement" thing. Maybe I played too many RTS games.
- I will also try the upgrade you proposed.

To Ripley:
- Believe me my friend I finished all my workunits cca 16 days ago and I did not seen any new since that. I am empty!

- I dont think that Climate pushed BOINC into "crazy mode".
You said that BOINC maybe try to catch up, because I am not in time.
I don't think so.
I started my work in early August and I've got work for cca 1100 hours. No I reached the point where 473 hours work is done and the deadline is July 2006.
I think I am ahead of schedule and not behind.

Hi Guys,

I have a problem. I am not getting new workunits.
I read the forums and i checked those thing was written there, but none of those worked for me.

So.... I have Seti and Climateprediction.

At first I've got only SETI but it was down too many times, so I said lets get enough work for 4 days. (change prefs) It was not enough, so I started Climate also to keep my computer busy. It is also was not enough, so I changed my prefs that way to run 80% of the time Climate project and only 20% SETI.

When I saw that I've go ne WU's I suspended climate and was concentrating to Seti.

cca 2 month ago I realized that I am not getting new work for 14 days, than I got work enough for cca 10 days, than another 14 days coming without work.

In my term "a day" means cca 6 hours, thats my standard daily running time of my computer.

Now I see that Seti works fine, so I changed my prefs to share resources between SETI and climate equally. Nothing happens. Now I am on my 14th day and nothing happened. When I checked my points I saw that my average is the same for 14 days without any work????

what I did till today:
- I am pushing the update button frequently
- The trick "no new work" - update - "Allow new work" - update trick also doesn't worked.
- I changed my prefs, nothing happened.
- I also replaced the Seti calculator program to an optimized one. (I know: Theoretically it has no effect to Seti, but what if?? --> nothing happened :) )

These are my latest messages since my computer is on:
