1) Message boards : Number crunching : Donating to Seti (Message 1064906)

It will last for 25 years or so to find E.T. by this project. It is hardly probable that the project can financially survive such a long period without constant donations.

In my homecountry Germany scientific projects don't need any donations by the public. But no scientific institute in Germany would start a project like seti@home because the search for E.T. is not considered to be a serious scientific attitude.

Therefore we should go on to spend some money to the project each year. Until today I've done it eight times, although I had some doubt concerning the future of the project in 2010. Let's hope that the long periods of downtime will become history in the near future.

Why is this project so often down? They have sun servers and ten years experience - but this doesn't seem to be enough yet.

Dotsch has now written an installation script for setihome@enhanced Beta that works fine on my old "mighty machine". The new HP-UX-client will be the most comfortable commandline-option for seti@home on the market now. :-)

Best bet for distributed computing are Intel and AMD. RISC-cpus have either lost the race for speed or are too exspensive.

I used "chown -R ulrich:users /opt/boinc". User "ulrich" is the only simple user on my system. The account was created using SAM.
I found out that HP-UX 11.11i v1 only reserved twenty megabytes disk space for simple user "ulrich". The whole disk is 9,1 GB. The regular seti-client crashed a week ago using the message that there wasn't enough disk space on the file system left. How can I change the disk space allocation for user "ulrich" ?

I only installed seti@enhanced. Logged in as root it works. Only my trials to run it as a simple user fail ("Not attached to project", server doesn't know the PA-RISC client, another instance is running etc.)
If you're not familiar with Unix right management and the structure of the seti-software, it's not so easy to install it.
Okay, at the moment I am Beta-Tester for the MacOSX-client too. And this has worked fine right from the beginning.
I will wait for the next update of your HP-UX-client and try again. Life is just a Beta-test ! ;-)

A few minutes ago I made a new trial for setihome@enhanced-beta using the files dotsch had sent to me via email. At the moment I am running the application logged in as root using /opt/boinc as a working directory. Of course, this means a severe lack of system security.
The system has downloaded a working unit using about 99% of cpu-power.

Somebody should work on the installation routine. Otherwise, only professional Unix-admins will be able to do the setup.
This was add to my account as a new system:

I've donated 100 US-Dollars to the project, because I don't want it to be shut down. I am convinced that Earth is observed by an alien race which has built a base on the backside of moon, but this not a scientific proof. Therefore seti enhanced will be the only chance to get that proof within my lifetime (I'm 46.)

Everybody should make a small donation to the project to keep it working.

Sorry, dotsch, but I didn't want to offense anybody. I only described my installation problems as a "technical home user" playing around with HP-UX-workstations.

Moreover, I haven't known yet, that I've used the way described in the installation instructions indeed. The term "no professional setup" didn't mean your work, but my own installation efforts. And obviously I am too stupid to understand your instructions. Therefore I had to play around until it worked.

In former times the commandline-clients of setihome@classic could be installed in the home-directory of the user who wanted to run it. This was a plain and simple solution. The editing of an account.xml-file is no problem in order to fix a bug.

Why is it necessary to install the client using /opt/boinc logged in as root ?
Thanks for your reply in advance. ;-)

Thanks for your quick reply.
I started the boinc_client one time running /opt/boinc/boinc_client and stopped it. Then I edited account_setiathome.berkeley.edu as you told me.
Logged in as root it now worked and downloaded a workunit - wow !
Hereafter I copied the whole /opt/boinc directory to /home/ulrich and used the command: "chown -R ulrich:users /home/ulrich/boinc".
Logged in as user "ulrich" the application now works running "/home/ulrich/boinc/boinc_client". The process uses up to 99 % of the system resources and is owned by user ulrich and not by root.

This is in no way a professional setup, but at the moment it works. ;-)

Okay, guys, I spent the whole evening with trying to install the software correctly on my C3600. The server refuses again and again to send me some work.
No workaround for the "attach-to-project"-procedure succeeded. This seems to be a little bit too complicated for a "technical home user" like me. On the other hand I needed just a few clicks to become a beta-tester for MacOSX.

There are a lot of cheap HP-UX-PA-RISC machines on ebay which could do some work for the project. But before we need correctly attaching boinc-clients. I will wait for the next client-update and try again.

My C3600/552 Mhz is now running the latest BOINC-Software 1.7.1, using HP-UX 11.11i V1. Although I downloaded some of the newest patch-packages (November 2005) I needed to install patches PHCO_31903, PHKL_32647 and PHSS_30970 to make the application work.

388 Whetstone and 1003 Dhrystone are not pretty much compared with 995 Whetstone and 3097 Dhrystone of my PowerMac G5 1,8 Ghz FSB 600, but on a 24-hour-base it should be enough to complete workunits within the time limit.

And now there's a new problem at the end of this Sunday full of "patch-work":
"Message from server: platform 'hppa2.0w-hp-hpux11.11' not found."

What to do now ?

I use a HP C3600/552Mhz running HP-UX11i version 1 december 2004 including some packages of the so called software pack (dec 2004). I couldn't find any newer patches on the HP-site. This may be due to the fact that I don't own any service contract from HP. I am a private person running PA-RISC as part of my computer hobby.
After installing the depot with SAM I tried to run the client first time bei typing "/opt/boinc/boinc_client" . The result was the message "SIGSEGV: segmentation violation" .
What to do now ?

I've just got my first HP-PA-RISC, a C 3600 running HP-UX 11i Dec.04. I would be glad about each easy to install seti-client.

The seti-project should create a Hall of Fame for dotsch and all other programmers who contributed useful software and especially clients for different plattforms to the project. Keep up the good work !

The link doesn't seem to work. Moreover you should try to store your well done work here:

The Porting and Archieving Center for HP-UX should be best bet. For the meantime we should find another site. How much MB are the packages ?
