1) Message boards : Number crunching : Everyone calm down! (Message 211355)

Aww Man!

If I can't be irked at Seti, and the bug game while cute is dull (how's about Halo on line? At least the Seti/Halo theme is there :-) then I have to actually be irked about something like oh say, avian flu (panick buy tamaflu) or say something else along those lines that require a knee jerk reacation to something that is wholly outside of the individuals control. :-)

Everyone is getting irked for some reason or another. For some it's Seti being down, and for others it's having to deal with the people who are angry about Seti being down.

Everyone sit back and play this game:

It's simple and the music is soothing. Tell me after playing this game you're not relaxed and happy.

On a side note, this is one of my favorite online games, and there's no violence, death, blood, guns, or anything like that. It's like being an innocent child again!

2) Message boards : Number crunching : Stats discrepencies (Message 168682)

Hi folks,

Since this is my account that you are talking about, I have not deleted any computers, we have seen a discrepency, is it a bug? I am not a progammer so I don't know (but I would say it was based on what I know about programming).

I know after the last downtime, my laptop credits were completely waxed, not creditied, so I am out those.

What do you mean brewing, it is already there, I went through and looked at my stats, and hundreds of work units are missing now from 2 of the computers. One of my computers only goes back to the 16th of august now.

4) Message boards : Number crunching : changing the priority of the thread to increase performance (Message 62426)

Well, yes you are correct, and verified by checking the thread priority. Interesting that it would reset in boinc where it didn't reset in seti@home classic. But no, agreed, no one is going to sit infront of the computer 24X7 watching thread priorities. Thanks!

5) Message boards : Number crunching : changing the priority of the thread to increase performance (Message 62289)

Just wanted to pass this along as I have noticed that it will cut about 1 hour off of seti processing time. Out of the box the seti thread in windows is set to low. By changing the thread priority from low to normal, I have noticed that I am cutting about 1 hour off my processing time.

Running Windows 2003, XP, and 2000, the decrease in time is about the same for each operating system. All these systems are stand alone and really don't do much other than provide internet gateway functions and/or run seti@home. The XP system is a desktop and have noticed no degredation in operations when running other programs (word, excel, IE, and Outlook Express at the same time).

Hope this helps number crunchers.

6) Questions and Answers : Wish list : I would just like the thing to work (Message 22983)

Anyone else noticing that really this is not working well? I have 7 computers that are dedicated to SETI@Home, and frankly they are just sitting there spinning.

So the question I have is did the project commit too early? Is this really a beta or alpha project or was the demand just underestimated?

I would like to just have this thing working, and doing what it is supposed to be doing rather than seeing endless messages that schedualers are failing to respond.

Someone clue me in, this has really turned into a massive corporate project like implimenting people soft, I don't see this project succeeding. Anyone else feel like whining, please respond to this message, might make you feel better.

Flame away.

Everything here is my opinion, your usage may differ.

It seems like they grew up a little bit, dropped the cute that threw them over 5 million downloads, and started to cater to the folks that really do want to help. I didn't want a screen saver, I wanted WU's and signals. Really if you look at classic S@H, only maybe 10,000 people did daily uploads, and had multiple computers running. But 5 million or more downloaded the program, tried it, didn't see ET on the first WU and abandoned it.

Right click the work unit if you want graphics, otherwise, enjoy the science and being part of a grid computing pheonomena. Use it on your annual eval at work, I am #X in our companies search for ET. (I Did, the boss didn't even know it, did some research, found every member of the team, brought us all in a room and asked how he could help!)
