I thought the final release of boinc was supposed to update itself when a new version is available. is this not the case?

I actually set it to use 8

now i upgraded to the public boinc version 3.19 and now half my machines don't run boinc at all because of this error:

my preferences in the accounts page imply that boinc may use gigs of space. I'm confused.
