I have about 260 (give or take) tasks "Ready to start." All are "Seti@Home Enhanced 6.08 (cuda)."

My Home, work, and default preferences are all the same...at least as far as there are 1:1 settings that can be the same. Seti@Home is given 1000 as the resource share in all 3 places.

I want my system busy running Seti@Home...that's why the other things are turned off. ...or are you saying that only 1 CUDA WU can run at any given time?

Here is a screenshot of my Boinc Preferences:

...and of my Seti@Home Preferences:

Seti@Home is the only Boinc app I'm running.

I have BOINC 6.6.20, Intel Quad Q6600 CPU, nVidia 8800GTX GPU, Windows 7 RC1, all of my BOINC preferences are max'd (use all CPUs, 100% of the time, etc). However, only one WU runs at any given time and it is indicated as "0.12 CPUs, 1 CUDA". It seems like the least it should be doing is running at one WU on each of the 4 processors.

Any ideas on improving the performance here?

The credit system in BOINC is done this way so that a user knows that "project A's" X credits = "project B's X credits".
BTW, this strikes me as saying "a slice of apple pie = a slice of orange."

You cannot have a system where one workunit = 1 credit, as in Project A the workunit takes 1 hr to complete on your computer and Project B take 800hrs.
We are talking two different things here, I think. "Project A," "Project B." I assume this means "SETI" vs "Einstein," for example. I couldn't care less about comparing projects A/B. I care about COMPUTERS A/B, both working on the same project.

When I first got BOINC it was for SETI, but I became aware of the other projects and decided to give Einstein a go as well. It took virtually no time at all to determine that running both (on the same machine) took me back to my initial experience with SETI...too little positive reinforcement (completed results) over too much time. Thus I quit Einstein and stuck with SETI.

I guess what I want to know is this: (assume all computers here are working on the same project) computer A and computer B get the same work unit. computer C and computer D get the same work unit, different from that of A and B. Assume both work units require essentially the same number of teraflops to complete. Computer A takes 1 hour to complete the unit; B takes 100 hours to complete; C and D each take 2 hours to complete their unit. A and B will each get the same credit; likewise C and D will too. How does A/B's credit compare with that of C/D's credit?

It is my contention that since all four computers did (essentially) the same amount of work (as measured by # of teraflops), all should get the same credit.

As I said previously, I either don't understand the allocation of credit or I don't like it. If all four computers do get the same credit, then, due to the averaging, I don't understand how. If they do not, then I still do not understand it because someone is getting penalized for having a fast computer or for having a slow one...I don't know who though...in either case, I don't like it.

I am on the verge of leaving Seti; I have not yet decided for sure. I have read the explanation of the BOINC credit allocation several times; I either don't understand it, or I do and I don't like it.

"Averaged between the users who have returned the same result"?? I want credit for the work I have done. Averaged means one time I possibly get too much credit, another time I get too little. In the long run it should even out. I understand all that. I don't like it. Give me a work unit. I'll give you a result. I should get credit for it. Simple. If my computer is faster than someone else's I can do more work; if I in fact do more work, I should get more credit. I don't want someone else's work added to mine, or vice versa.

I joined Seti@home in May, 1999. I completed 3 work units in 263 hours and shut it down: it took too long to get any positive reinforcement: almost 88 hours/unit. Two and a half years later I happened to notice a friend's computer had completed 150 units...perhaps the round number caught my attention...since I had just upgraded to what I knew was a faster system than his, I wondered how long it would take me to catch him; I fired up Seti again and it's been running essentially 24/7 ever since. It took a while, but I did catch him. Today, when Classic shut down, I have 7046 units submitted and I've been completing a work unit about every 2.5 hours. After catching my friend, my next BIG milestones were the days that I reached the 90th and 99th percentiles in results returned. My disappointments are that I didn't quite reach my 7500 certificate nor 10,000.

Since none of us expect to be THE one who finds ET, it is things like this that keep us going and interested. Is BOINC's credit system going to be as satisfying? I don't see that it is. The Classic credits were explainable to people that were wondering what the hell I was doing. I have no idea how to explain BOINC credits to them.

Yes, there is the science; there is the satisfaction in participating. There is also the tedium of day after day, year after year of not finding ET. It is the little things, such as watching myself climb the list on the "birthday page" that helped maintain my interest. How is BOINC's credit system going to to this?
