It's not that hard. You learn to start downloads, go somewhere else for awhile and then come back to see if it's done.

I can verify this is true. I had no members a week ago and my personal stats were something like 30 or so. Guido was the first to join my team and he had over 2 thousand at the time. The team stats didn't change at all immediately after he joined. Later that day he posted a message saying he was just finishing a wu, then they changed.

Good idea. One thing we will have to have, of course, is "Guido's Picture Page." ;-)

Not to mention the obvious (but I'm going to anyway). The 'analog modem' complaint is placed in a thread that is clearly titled 'picture thread.' If you don't like all of the pictures perhaps one way to see less of them would be to avoid threads that have 'PICTURE THREAD' prominently displayed right in the subject line.

I just downloaded the first files from predictor but they're not running yet. I have the work share between the two projects at 50% each. So I was wondering how 50% is given out. Are both programs supposed to be running at the same time each taking half of the available cpu power or does one program run for say 5 hours then the other program gets 5 hours alternating between projects?

Don't get me wrong Quail. I am not saying the size of your pic is bad or anything. I was just using every pics size in the entire thread to put it into perspective. Personally I don't care about the size of the pics.

I'm not sure about other browsers or OS's but in WinXP MS internet explorer version 6 I just right click on any graphic then left click on properties. That tells me the type of file, the size, dimensions, originating url and date created/modified.

I just wanted to respond about Guido's pictures. I would have started a new thread for this but I am going to be referencing all of the the other posts in this thread so I thought it would be best right here.

1. Let's get over this idea that the pictures force everyone to take longer to open a thread. They don't in the least. In case you haven't noticed the entire text of all posts in a thread are loaded first. Then at the last the pictures are loaded. So even if it takes forever to load all the pictures you can still read the posts while they are downloading and then move on before their done if you're not interested in the pics or wait for them to finish if you are.

2. The pics aren't that big anyway. In this thread guido's picture is 8,763 bytes. Poorboy, YOUR alienware pic is 20,577 bytes (2.35 times the size). Jorden's stats picture is 12,635 and quail's stats pic is 51,117. Guido's is the smallest of all of them. Since the majority of the posters in these forums are using the stats pictures, they are, more than anything, slowing up the loading of the threads.

3. I reassert they aren't really slowing anything up anyway. I use myself as proof of that. I am forced (due to my geographical backwoods location) to use a 26Kbps dial-up account for internet access (yes I have 56K modem but the phone lines don't accept that fast: I did say BACKWOODS). I have never noticed a problem with loading these pages compared with the average time it takes to load other web pages. So if I am not experiencing extra-ordinary slow down I seriously doubt others are; especially if they have DSL.

Oh come on quail, ya gotta admit it kinda livens up the place. I mean how many people have ever addressed a letter to you as 'DEAR (picture of bird here)?' That's funny!
And since I am here, congrats to all the team members of 'Yes of course, reverse the polarity!' We are now at 6 members and 1944.95 total credits. I know there are a lot of other teams with more TC's but not too many of them created their team just last week and had zero total credits as of three days ago. By that rate we could be number one a month or two before we land on mars!
I wonder at what point I should start working on a team newsletter??? Hmmm.

note to guido: picture of mars or other planet to follow please.

I agree with you, I would like to have my and my teams rankings right on my account page. But I suppose that will have to wait till they get the other bugs worked out.
On the bright side think of it this way. If you know your exact total credit's you can start at offset=5000 then move to 10,000. If you're in between there somewhere just divide by half each time and at most you would only have to try 8 times to get to the page with your listing!

Thanks bill. I see now I'll just have to be patient since I keep 5 to 7 days worth of work on my pc and I had just updated SAH before trying PAH.
I tried doing a search on predictor before I posted that question but for some unknown reason that section of the web page wasn't working. ;)

I've practically given up on those leader boards and their "20 at a time" screens. At least with Seti classic it would have a continual list. 20 per screen helps out our dial-up friends but for the rest of broadband users it would be nice to have an option to see the list at once.

=================================================

Remember E.T. you only have to click next 20 once then you can edit the URL line to go to whatever range you want immediately. Makes it much faster when you're trying to find your team and you currently rank over 11,000.

A quick question about predictor. I downloaded 3.20 and thought I would try that project as well, only seti before now. I can get attached to the project okay and my setting all look fine but it's not downloading any work. Every time I try to update the project it comes back with the following message but no work. Anyone else have this problem and know what to do or is there just no work today from there as well?

Predictor@home - 2004-07-12 21:36:41 - Scheduler RPC to http://predictor.scripps.edu/predictor_cgi/cgi succeeded

I was thinking about your post asking what is the gain. You stated that a 2GHz and a 1GHz are better than overclocking a pc to 2.1GHz. This is true, but a lot of people don't want to spend the money to go buy/build a second computer when, like me, they can just click their mouse to tell their computer to run faster.
In my situation I have a home built 1.8GHz pentium 4 with pretty much top of the line everything you can buy in it. Before this one I had only bought middle of the range computers from those national stores. I found in all of my previous computers that after two years they were obsolete. By obsolete I mean they wouldn't run over 70% of the newest games (my own personal standard for obsolete, I know). So in building this one I purposely picked out the better quality parts with the express idea of being able to overclock when the time came that it would be considered old thus extending its useful life considerably longer.
I've been overclocking now for about four months (for anyone interested, I went from the 1800MHz to 2018.9MHz, the ram from 266MHz to 298MHz, and the pci clock speed from 33MHz to 37MHz). I have been having no bad side effects that I can see.
Now I realize this might stress my cpu and I might not get as long of a life out of it, but I'm okay with that. Think about the cost of buying or building a new computer. I can build a basic cheap one for around $350 easily, a really good quality one for around $900 to $1100 range. A new 1.8GHz retail cpu with fan goes for $121 on zipzoomfly.com right now. Even if I had to replace the motherboard it would still be cheaper. And if you're talking AMD then it even gets lower, a 2000+ goes for $54. So I'm not too worried about stressing my cpu right now.
And then the odd thing is that once I started overclocking I believe the average temperature of the cpu went down. I have 6 case fans, 12 total in computer, all 6 of those are thermostatically controlled. So when the temp goes up they increase RPM's. They tend to stay revved up a little longer after the temp goes down so on average my cpu runs about 1 degree cooler now.

Ah, good to know poorboy. Thanks for the info, that explains why I couldn't find it where I thought it should be. But on a happier note a third member just joined. Two in one day! So at that rate it shouldn't take more than 7 or 8 years before we make it to the teams goal of 1000 to 1020 ranking!

In the area where you would normally click on 'top teams' click on 'top participants.'

I just checked on my teams stats. I don't know if the database updated the list that fast since Guido just joined literally minutes ago. But adding up his totat credits and mine the team should be ranked 904. I'll have to check back on that later to make sure.

Actually that post was referring to individual rank based on total credits for my account alone, not team statistics. I still haven't gotten around to looking up the team statistics yet. I'll do that now.
