The facts are that this is a politcal discussion thread, not a personal attack thread.

Post:
Blogs of war wrong on bias, says media analysis
By Michael Gawenda, Herald Correspondent in Washington
March 15, 2005

Media coverage of the Iraq war by the American media was not biased in favour or against the war, according to new research, despite claims the coverage was generally biased and negative.

The Project for Excellence in Journalism, a Washington think tank affiliated with Columbia University's school of journalism, looked at more than 2000 stories in newspapers and on television and websites.

Most were "straight" news reports, according to the survey's director, Tom Rosenstiel, with 25 per cent of the stories positive and 20 per cent negative. The rest could not be classified one way or the other.

The survey is unlikely to pacify conservative critics of the mainstream media who have argued the media has concentrated on all the things that have gone wrong in Iraq while downplaying positive developments.

Conservative bloggers - who far outnumber liberal ones - have run a relentless campaign against what they see as the liberal bias of the mainstream media.

These internet warriors can claim some credit for the resignation 12 months ago of New York Times executive editor Howell Raines, despised because of his liberal sympathies.

They can also claim credit for the end of Dan Rather's 24-year stint as the presenter of the CBS evening news after they revealed that memos Rather had used last September for a story alleging President George Bush had failed to turn up for training during his stint with the Texas National Guard in the 1960s were fake.

Mr Rosenstiel said he accepted that his survey, which he described as the most thorough examination of the way the media covered the war and its aftermath, would not change the minds of those who supported the war or those who believed the media were too soft on the Administration's case for war in the lead-up to the conflict.

"There was enough to annoy both camps, but the majority of stories were just news," he says.

He said free-to-air evening TV news coverage of Iraq was probably more negative than positive, while the opposite was true about morning news coverage.

Fox News ran twice as many positive news stories from Iraq as negative ones, while CNN was more even-handed.

The report also looks at coverage of the presidential election campaign last year. It found 36 per cent of stories on Mr Bush were negative compared with 12 per cent for John Kerry, with 20 per cent of stories positive for Mr Bush, compared with 30 per cent for Senator Kerry.

Mr Rosenstiel said these figures did not necessarily reflect bias but, instead, the fact that coverage was always more intense and questioning when it came to the incumbent.

OK, Now that this forum has degraded to a race in the special olympics, the following text is from an e-mail that my 72 year old father (a man wise beyond his years) sent me:

Your retirement is at risk. If you want market linked investments, 401k's are already available. From first hand experience, we just got our money out of "growth" funds before the tech bubble burst . . . otherwise I might still be working. Think twice about letting W mess with Social Security. It's a direct attack on the many members of our society who would be easy prey for unscrupulous managers. SS, although not a path to retirement wealth, is a financial "floor" that can prevent poverty. Write your congressmen.

Dad

Here's "W" on SS, read carefully:

"Because the—all which is on the table begins to address the big cost

drivers. For example, how benefits are calculate, for example, is on

the table; whether or not benefits rise based upon wage increases or

price increases. There's a series of parts of the formula that are

being considered. And when you couple that, those different cost

drivers, affecting those—changing those with personal accounts, the

idea is to get what has been promised more likely to be—or closer

delivered to what has been promised. Does that make any sense to you?

It's kind of muddled. Look, there's a series of things that cause

the—like, for example, benefits are calculated based upon the increase

of wages, as opposed to the increase of prices. Some have suggested

that we calculate—the benefits will rise based upon inflation, as

opposed to wage increases. There is a reform that would help solve the

red if that were put into effect. In other words, how fast benefits

grow, how fast the promised benefits grow, if those—if that growth is

affected, it will help on the red."

Thank you for being rational. They have already made several changes in the past. I seem to recall previous arguments for reform that indicated financial difficulties with the fund 40 years from 1970.

I really think the success of the fund is based on the correct assesment of general economic performance. If you over estimate performane you can be in real trouble. If you under estimate, you are an alarmist, and nothing bad happens.

Are you an optimistic Republican, or a pesimist?

Who do you trust more? Public servants, or greedy corporate executives and board members whose mantra is "profit, profit, profit"?

I work for a corporation with over 100,000 employees that is now in deep shit because of accounting irregularities. The "Board" just took away the health benefits for retirees, which were a part of the benefits package since the early 60's. Some of these people have 30 + years in under the impression that they would have health benefits when they retired. The benefits were one of the main reasons why they chose to stay with this employer.

Who did the accounting irregularites benefit? Why - the CEO and the board, that's who. The CEO made over 28 million dollars last year alone while driving the company into the ground - not to mention his golden parachute. There are now several lawsuits pending, but thanks to the tort reforms, and new rules for class actions that the nazi's have implemented, damage awards may be limited...

Keep your fricken hands of off MY Social Security that I have paid into my whole life!

Have a nice day!

OK, I'll bite. How about "agnostic" thread, or how about "non organized religous thread"? I am not against religion, but the organization of it sure has ultimately resulted in alot of pain, suffering and death, all in the name of God (that's dog spelled backwards ;)).
